DailySkew 2012 MLB Predictions Baseball Projections Picks
Baseball.DailySkew.com Administrator Damian Hospital:
American League: Yankees, Tigers, Angels, Blue Jays
National League: Phillies, Reds, Rockies, Marlins
No overblown analysis needed: we don’t believe in “experts” since anything can happen in baseball, nor do we split hairs with the technical definitions of a projection vs prediction vs pick. Just have fun.
Damian picked 4/8 teams correctly last season: Yankees, Phillies, Tigers, and Brewers. Tony Vahl, CCB3, and Michael Tranni also picked 4 teams correctly (although not the same ones).
Can you beat 4 teams? Post your predictions or link to them in comment section, or send e-mail to get them in before Opening Day.

Checking into my favorite baseball/Enneagram blog:
I don’t know if you’ve listened to the broadcast today, but it is more and more apparent that Al Leiter and Michael Kay straight-up do not like each other. They spent about 15 minutes tepidly going back and forth about whether Kay should correct Leiter on air if he misspeaks(Leiter repeatedly said it’s fine but Kay kept insisting that he shouldn’t). You can tell there’s some real underlying tension there.
I watched a YouTube video of Leiter from a few months ago in which he mentions that Kay thinks he’s some sort of a fake fan because he claims to have liked both the Mets and Yankees growing up. Why bring up this unless he’s harboring negative feelings about Kay? Leiter is now teasing Kay about his propensity for big words.
I think Leiter is a typically affable 6w7 who likes to avoid open conflict at all costs and never openly takes Kay’s bait, although I’m sure he would like to. I’m not sure if Kay is a 5, actually, although I know you’ve theorized that he is. He doesn’t seem withdrawn at all and doesn’t have any need for personal space. If anything, Kay would be a 5w6. A good baseball example of a 5w6 is Mike Mussina, I think; Kay does not remind me of him (in fact they disliked each other). I think Kay may closer to the 1w2 or 2w1 side of things. I don’t most 5s would go off on this, much less on air: http://www.waswatching.com/archives/2006/08/michael_kays_ra.html
Thanks for informative comment. I hate when Kay lashes into Leiter, who yes, is a 6w7.
Let me just give you some background behind my thought processes:
Regarding Kay..the reason why I typed him a 5 is because he’s a Loki, God of Mischief Type 5. He’s too cerebral, and very awkward socially and physically. He draws emotional reactions from people because he’s a little man, with fake confidence. It took him a loooong time to get married. He’s unhealthy, so that’s why he’s a nutjob 5. He pulled too many strings behind the scenes. He probably did well in school and made his mother proud. He said he was afraid of getting hit with a baseball in school. Very weak.
Kay is two-faced when it comes to Leiter. Kay and Leiter apparently are cool off camera and eat out sometimes with no problems. Leiter, of course, comes off as the peaceful martyr. But that’s the drawback of being a 6 when they are “above the fray”- at times he appears to be spineless (or too polite).
An obvious Enneagram Type 1 is Tim McCarver. Tim has respect for his partners, but is critical of players. Ones are professional. McCarver would never flirt with his partner (like Kay used to do with Kim Jones, who is a Type 7).
I’ve had some co-workers who were confirmed Type 5s and acted like Kay once they feel comfortable. My best friend as a kid was a 5, and he was outgoing but devious, like Eddie Haskel from Leave it to Beaver. And that’s the key- Kay is VERY comfortable where he works. It’s like home to him. A 5w4 would also let his emotions get the best of him. Richard Nixon had a 5w6 thing going for himself. A 5w6 would love sarcasm, like Kay does, and so would a 5w4.
The Fives I know actually leave bait when they are part of a team. Other types that are notorious for leaving bait are Fours and Sevens. Eights, Twos, and Sixes usually subconsciously leave bait. A Three would leave bait to manipulate someone. Ones and Nines are pretty reserved when it comes to making someone angry for entertainment purposes.
Ones are pretty much traditional. The way Paul O’Neil, Ken Singleton, Flash Flaherty, David Cone, and others react to Kay shows me that Kay is a weirdo and gets off confusing them or pushing their buttons. Kay has that “New Yawk” elitist edge that is a very important factor in what he gets away with. He learned being shy and nerdy doesn’t get you anywhere in NY, so he adopted an antagonistic flair, and made millions of it after all of these years.
Anyway, another baseball Five is Randy Johnson. He’s your typical shy and eccentric Five, but he was also very cocky and combative, and probably would say something off color on air if he was an announcer. Another baseball One is Tom Glavine- boring as heck, but informative and dedicated.
As far as Kay being a Two, that’s a good one, because I do know a male Two that says stupid things to get a reaction, but he is totally oblivious to it. A male Two is like John Ritter’s characters, and would attempt to elevate his partners instead of bringing them down. A Two can be comfortable being a sidekick or part of a team, not something who disrupts broadcasts with garbage. A 2w3 may like to be The Leader, but he or she would be okay with someone being a front man, something Kay would never allow anymore (he was forced to be Sterling’s equal). [Sterling is an obvious 6, like Phil Hendrie.]
Bottom line is that this is all fun speculation. :-)
I will keep an open mind about Kay being a 1 or 2 and test it again because I respect your opinion. Plus Jerry Seinfeld is a One, and Kay can be like that- especially when it comes to food. Thanks!
You make some great points. Frankly, I really don’t know about Kay. It’s difficult for me to accept him as a 5 because he doesn’t seem isolated or hidden at all on any level. That said, he is quite investigative and inquisitive, although when he’s doing his routine interrogations of his fellow YES booth members it never seems quite dispassionate enough for him to be a 5. My gut says he’s still probably a 2 — he’s obsessed with receiving admiration (even though he’s socially awkward and isn’t great at going after it, really), loves feeling needed, focused on flattering others… and I think he phototypes very much as a 2 as well. Not sure if you subscribe to the idea of phototyping, but two long-time Enneagram teachers make a good case for it here: http://pinterest.com/enneagram/ I think Randy Johnson or Mussina could fit on their 5 page much better than Kay could.
I agree with you on all your other typings and agree this is just fun speculation when it comes down to it. Glad to hear that you agree Leiter is a 6w7; I am too. Leiter is decent in the booth, but I think Cone still rules it.
PS, not sure if you happened to hear it, but Leiter joked on the air today about his jumpiness and nervous nature. Something about how people rag on him for it even though someone like Nick Swisher (an obvious 7, I’d say) acts as if they’ve had 3 Red Bulls every day (Leiter joked that he acts like he’s had only 1).
Yes I did hear the game…Swish is a prototypical 7, yes.
It’s funny you’re a 6w7, because that is the type of my DailySkew partner. You write in a similar style. He’s also into Pinterest, so I will show him that link. Of course I have problems with Keanu being listed as a 5 since he usually acts like a 9.
Anyway, Fives aren’t all shy by nature. It is a bi-product, of course, because they believe the truth comes from thinking about it. As you’ve said the key in investigation and questioning, two of Kay’s strengths. He was always into stats and was a beat reporter (hack) to uncover truths. Back in his awesome radio days, Sterling was the dreamer and story teller and Kay was the straight man and analytical one. Sterling was optimistic and Kay was pessimistic.
Regarding Kay’s wings: Sixes can rant. They love ranting (Glenn Beck). So do Fours (Michael Savage).
Ron Paul is a healthy Five, but here is Paul ranting in public: http://youtu.be/VvVqDEQG8bY?t=2m20s
If a Five believes something, he will go crazy about it. It just so happens Kay’s theories are about baseball.
Remember, a typical “conspiracy theorist” is a Five. Imagine if he or she was in the booth?
How about the typical absent-minded professor Five, like an Einstein? He was quite a character and capable of different emotional bandwidths.
On the other hand, a Five like Bud Selig or even Bill Gates is boring and generally reserved on-air, although different in private. These successful Fives had to network and socialize. My childhood father figure was the 5 you are referring to: a private person who loathed interacting with strangers and who would never act unprofessionally on-air. He did manage to amass millions of dollars by working night shift at a hospital for 30+ years in NY, real estate, and by staying away from people.
But Kay is the mischievous Five. The Trickster God. He would be a Batman villain.
Finally, Fives fear rejection and the “average Five” doesn’t think he or she is attractive. Kay has issues with women.
Kay as a 2: was thinking about it on the way to work last night. Was almost sold on it. He is a good host. Doesn’t like pain. Nags. Needs his ego stroked. Into relationships with co-workers. Funny.
But one reason why I passed up on him as a Two has to do with his mathematics skill and logic. Two’s aren’t into logic. They are into mystique. They are generally more upbeat and optimistic. Kay has too many reservations about things. He loves to prove facts. Not a benchmark of Twos. Another reason is that male Twos have female friends. Kay’s only female before his wife seemed to be his sister. He would joke about being alone a lot.
We would have to look at his fears and desires and start comparing 5w6 or 5w4 vs 2w1 or 2w3. Also consider the level of disintegration that he may fall into sometimes.
I have 14 years of E-Gram experience under my belt, with 4 years of psychology at university, and running group therapy.
Thanks for the thoughtful response, very cool that you’re so experienced with the Enneagram. Your points about Kay are very convincing. I’ll look forward to your next Enneagram and YES Network/baseball post. :)
After listening to Kay with an open mind and studying 2w1s I’m going to officially change my view of him being a Social Instinct 5 and say he’s an average 2w1, with some 2w3 in the mix.
