Yankees rookie JESUS Montero made his major league debut on 9/1/2011 and is currently batting .286/.359/.571 with 3HR as a semi-DH vs lefties (39 plate appearances). He’s not allowed to catch (the only game in which he did was because both catchers Russell Martin and Francisco Cervelli were injured, and he only was allowed to go 6 innings (before Austin Romine arrived) because of what the scouts say about him. Well Montero proved them wrong by throwing out a would-be base stealer but proved them right by being unable to catch low pitches. Brian Cashman thinks JESUS Montero sucks as a catcher, and he may be right, but why not give him a chance to improve?
Well, Montero just doesn’t know how to block or catch pitches in the dirt and Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi will not give him on the job training. The 21-year old JESUS has been catching since 2007, but is still very raw. The question is why Cashman (who has been in control of Montero’s career) has been decreasing Montero’s value as a prospect by grooming him to be a DH. Cashman has a history of doing his best to not expose prospects until they are needed at the major league level, but he seems to be going out of his way to tell the world that JESUS can’t catch but has the potential to be a Manny Ramirez/Hall of Fame caliber hitter.
Would having a 21-year Mike Piazza be such a bad thing?
I know Dodgers and Mets fans would complain about Mike Piazza’s defense, let’s be square: his hitting made him a SUPER valuable player, and over a season his bat made up for his poor defense, questionable pitcher psychology, stolen bases allowed, and passed balls. Jorge Posada was never known as a good defensive catcher (which is why he rode the pine for years- which caused him to be just a borderline HOF’er- while Joe Girardi was catching).
Let Montero be the full-time DH- NOW or let him catch-NOW, none of this dumb “occasionally DH vs lefties” crap. Give him a spot on the 2011 Yankees post-season roster.
JESUS is frustrated. Ever since I saw his interview this spring, I saw that he thinks he’s a superstar and is wasting away in the minor leagues. Don’t get me wrong- he says the right things and he is very polite and politically correct- but you heard it here first at DailySkew Baseball- he will be an outspoken and cocky player down the road. He’s already cocky but no one else realizes it. I’m not saying that is a bad thing…I’m just sayin’. If you thought Jorge Posada was hot-blooded, JESUS may equal or eclipse his personality when everything is said and done.
I noticed JESUS’ body language and facial expressions are hiding an inner rage and frustration about the way Brian Cashman has held him back. He is a very talented hitter and he knows there is NO MONEY in the minor leagues, and NO MONEY in being a Designated Hitter. Heck, unless he becomes an elite Top 3 MLB catcher, there’s not a whole lot of money being a catcher compared to other positions. He wanted to make the team this year out of Spring Training, and is tired of people focusing on his weaknesses.
Unlike some other shy Yankees rookies, Montero gladly took three curtain calls when he hit his HRs. He is already disrespectful to umpires. He already trains with the guys on blocking balls in the dirt but just says “yeah, yeah” and can’t reproduce the results during a game. Never underestimate the fact that he is a 21-Venezuelan kid who thinks he is invincible and better than the veterans on the team. He is a hungry lion and he wants playing time, balls in the dirt be damned.
Joe Girardi seems hooked on Austin Romine catching because he has that “gritty team player white dude” gimmick, also called the “I can’t hit, so I must be a good defensive player” aura.
Why am I picturing Romine/Cervelli (if his concussion doesn’t end his young career) as catchers for the 2012 Yankees, with JESUS Montero either being the DH or getting traded?
Cashman and Girardi were proven WRONG with holding back Ivan Nova due to his cockiness, and Robinson Cano had a swagger that turned Joe Torre off. These guys just don’t understand Latin players. Tony Pena should have a bigger role and become JESUS Montero’s handler.
If you think this is a biased/racist post, keep in mind the name of the site is DailySKEW, okay? I have no inside info about the Yanks and I am not a journalist. But mark my words about how JESUS Montero feels and how Cashman is mishandling him.
