Yankees Hitters WAR 1994-2011; Mets Hitters WAR 1985-2000

Who were the Yankees hitters MVPs from the modern era according to WAR? Keep in mind, WAR for batters combines offense and defense by position:

1994 (strike): Wade Boggs (4.5 WAR)
1995 (strike): Bernie Williams (6 WAR)
1996: Bernie Williams (3.4 WAR)
1997: Bernie Williams (5.8 WAR)
1998: Derek Jeter (7.8 WAR)
1999: Derek Jeter (8 WAR)
2000: Jorge Posada (5.7 WAR)
2001: Bernie Williams (4.9 WAR)
2002: Jason Giambi (7.3 WAR)
2003: Jorge Posada (6.1 WAR)
2004: Alex Rodriguez (6.2 WAR)
2005: Alex Rodriguez (8.4 WAR)
2006: Derek Jeter (6.3 WAR)
2007: Alex Rodriguez (9.9 WAR)
2008: Alex Rodriguez (5.4 WAR)
2009: Derek Jeter (6.5 WAR)
2010: Robinson Cano (6.5 WAR)
2011 (so far): Brett Gardner (3.6 WAR)

best yankee of all time

Total WAR: Derek Jeter (70.5 WAR), Jorge Posada (45.1 WAR), Alex Rodriguez (44.4 WAR)

Comments: Pretty cool that Bernie Williams shows up here…PROOF that Derek Jeter is not overrated…Is A-Rod under-appreciated in New York, or what?…Don’t underestimate Jorge…I said WTF with Gardner; so I compared his WAR offense vs defense components, and it seems that Gardner gets much more credit for defense than Curtis Granderson (Granderson may be the best LF in baseball right now), who is the traditional Yankees MVP this season.

Let’s check out the New York Mets WAR MVPs. I selected 1985-2000 because that’s when I was a die-hard Mets fan.

1985: Gary Carter (6.7 WAR)
1986: Keith Hernandez (5.6 WAR)
1987: Darryl Strawberry (6.7 WAR)
1988: Darryl Strawberry (5.9 WAR)
1989: Howard Johnson (7.7 WAR)
1990: Darryl Strawberry (6.5 WAR)
1991: Howard Johnson (4.1 WAR)
1992: Eddie Murray (1.9 WAR)
1993: Bobby Bonilla (3.4 WAR)
1994: Bobby Bonilla (3.1 WAR)
1995: Jeff Kent (3 WAR)
1996: Bernard Gilkey (8.1 WAR)
1997: Edgardo Alfonso (7 WAR)
1998: John Olerud (8.1 WAR)
1999: Robin Ventura (6.7 WAR)
2000: Edgardo Alfonso (6.7 WAR)

Total WAR: Darryl Strawberry (32.2 WAR), Howard Johnson (24.7 WAR), Edgardo Alfonso (22.8 WAR)

best met ever

Comments: Uhm…when did Mike Piazza come over?…No wonder I think the early 1990s suck…Yeah, I witnessed what Gilkey did, and it’s a shame he was just a one-hit wonder….Alfonso was underrated…Yankees > Mets
