Howdy true believers, this is Snapshot Joe Atlantic! Welcome to another addition to the DailySkew Universe- Snapshot Joe Presents…In this one shot edition, I will be copying and pasting quotes from people who witnessed Mark McGwire hit 70 homeruns in 1998, which shattered Roger Maris’ single season record of 61. Now DailySkew Zombies know that me, Snapshot Joe, doesn’t look into the vault of history because I love the present moment, but if Stan Lee could publish Marvel Tales, I could do this! What a great year 1998 was for baseball, thanks to Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s homerun race!
Let’s take a look at some immortal quotes from that time period:
”We’ve had so much disgusting, low-character behavior to focus on in our nation for so many years, to have something clean-cut, wholesome and innocent that we can get excited about is a relief.”
– Dr. Laura Schlessinger”Look at there, look at there. McGwire flight No. 61 to Planet Maris. . . . Pardon me for a moment while I stand and applaud.”
– Jack Buck”The two greatest things I’ve ever seen are Hank Aaron’s 715th home run and now McGwire’s homer.”
– Joe Morgan”People don’t realize what it’s like being Mark McGwire right now. We went out for dinner to an Italian restaurant. After we’d finished, there were people outside, waiting for autographs. Mark signed every one.”
– Pat Kelly”This guy is touching millions of people. How many people know where the president is today and what he’s doing? But they know where Mark is. He’s taken everything else off the front page.”
– Rene Lachemann”It’s kind of pleasant to turn to the great deeds of the diamond. It’s a relief for the country. You feel a little less embarrassed for the behavior of people in high places.”
– Roger Kahn”There hasn’t been anybody who has cut across age barriers, cultural barriers around here since Charles Lindbergh.”
– Charles Jaco”I don’t have the vocabulary to describe what Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa did this year. I mean to hit 70 home runs. That sounds so strange.”
– Frank Robinson”I didn’t hit them as majestic as those two guys, McGwire and Sosa. . . . We may never see anybody hit them like they did.”
– Hank Aaron”He doesn’t surprise me. I’ve seen him hit golf balls at Pebble Beach the pros stop to watch.”
– Reggie Jackson”All of this is dumped on this one guy, and he’s responsible for carrying it. Everyone was waiting for him to act stressed out, overwhelmed and self-centered. But he didn’t stub his toe once. In fact, he rose to new heights.”
– Tony La Russa”White America was looking for a white sports hero, and Mark McGwire was that person. We had a national hero; we just didn’t notice there were two.”
– Richard Lapchick”Fifty years from now, I hope they remember me, too.”
– Sammy Sosa”If next year, you have two or three guys hitting 64, 65, or even 68 home runs then you can say baseball has changed. But if guys fall short, then this season will stand as one of baseball’s great, great seasons.”
– Ken Burns”I hope I’m not haunted by it the rest of my life. Every time the replay is shown I’m not going to turn the TV off. I just hope he hits 75 next year so people will forget I gave up No. 70.”
– Carl Pavano”I know how grueling it is to do what I’ve done. Will it be broken? Could be. Will I be alive? Maybe. Will I still be playing? If I am, I’m going to ask out of the lineup so I can be there.”
– Mark McGwire”If people want to make me into a role model for adults and kids, so be it . . . But I’m just being who I am.”
– Mark McGwire
Well, that was a nice trip down memory lane, wasn’t it my loyal readers? In the spirit of time traveling, here’s a photo of me from 1973!
