2010 All-Star Snubs and Baseball Allstar Game Controversy: Who Cares?

all star game snub

Every year…every year it’s the same thing in the week or two preceding the MLB All-Star Game in July: fans, MEDIA, and some players and managers complain about some aspects of the fairness or rules of the All-Star Game. The names may change, but the themes are exactly the same. It’s one of the reasons why I stopped getting into debates over the All-Star Game and waste precious time and energy getting upset about an exhibition game. Here’s a listing of reasons why people complain about so-called All-Star Game controversies:

  1. “My favorite player was snubbed.” Some people take it further and have a cow if their favorite player was chosen as a reserve.
  2. Some complain about how each team must have at least one player chosen; the reason why this rule was made was because the All-Star Game is a celebration of Major League Baseball and all of it’s franchises. Yeah, every year, a better player gets left off because some Pittsburgh Pirates player must appear, but so what? What if you were a Pirates fan…why watch?
  3. The All-Star rosters are too big, I mean the All-Star rosters are too small…I’ve heard both arguments. The first argument has to do with your favorite player not getting an at-bat, and how the game takes too long because the manager has to make substitutions, and how the importance of making the team gets diluted. The “too small” argument relates to your favorite player (also called “a deserving player”) gets snubbed.
  4. Managers have too much power, and always pick their own team’s players.
  5. Bud Selig always tinkers with the rules and tradition after the Tied All-Star Game fiasco.
  6. The game starts at 8:00PM: too late.
  7. “Back in my day”, Pete Rose and Ted Williams played HARD and everyone had National or American League pride, and played to win. Guess you need to hop into your time machine and relive that era.
  8. Who should be the starting pitcher? How many innings should he be allowed to throw? How to make sure all the pitchers get work? blahblahblahblah
  9. Complaining about the fans vote and fan run-off votes. Yes, it’s so ironic when fans complain about their own selections..LOL
  10. Injured players, or semi-injured players. Should they still go and get paid?
  11. Anyway…my point is…stop taking the All-Star Game so seriously, and just have some fun watching it.

Glavine was such an outfront figure on the strike, plus taking the Mets' money, he epitomizes the money is everything type of player fans really can't stand. I remember his preening during the '94 strike, it was as ugly as the stupid things coming out of Bud Selig's mouth, this really made him unpopular. I agree Glavine is an outstanding pitcher, and a sure hall-of-famer. But he'll always be looked at as a mercenary, who'll do anything for a buck!

I am and always have been a big Pete Rose fan, but I am sick and tired of the inconsistencies in Bud Selig's decisions / rulings. Why in the hell can't we get rid of this guy and get a REAL commissioner? Geez, would that be too much to ask?!!!

I think it is rather rude for the fans to boo the players that aren’t from their home turf. Is this a common All Star tradition? And when did that tradition begin? If a player made the cut, then they all should be recognized for their playing ability – they have made the cut for a reason. Perhaps its not an All Star tradition – just ultra rude Californians.

I agree, Sherry. Red Sox and Yankees were boo’ed heavily. Pretty sick!
