It seemed to me that the Yankees hierarchy decided to ignore Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre, the same way that the Steinbrenner sons and their lackeys had been downgrading Joe Torre’s role in 12 post-season appearances and 4 World Championships with the New York Yankees.
Case in point: I had to wait until the 3rd inning before getting a shot at Joe Torre in the dugout. Michael Kay proceeded to take Derek Jeter out of context from his interview earlier in the day and chose to focus on the quote in which Jeter said that he wants to beat Torre. Michael Kay left out the park where Jeter pretty much said he owes his entire career to Joe Torre and how he’s like a father figure, how they remain friends, and how they will continue to be close friends.
Whereas the focus of the night should have been the Yankees vs Joe Torre storyline, instead Michael Kay was waxing poetic for Hall of Fame announcer Vin Scully, and how he pulled off two interviews with him. The focus of the night was about the ANCIENT history between the Brooklyn Dodgers vs the New York Yankees, and the LA Dodgers vs Yankees of the 1970′s and 1980′s: again, old, old, old, news that has been reported thousands of times in the last 30 years.
The YESNetwork chose to focus on Manny Ramirez, like this was his homecoming or something like that.
The fact that A-Rod did not shake hands and greet Joe Torre before the game only received a one-sentence mention by Michael Kay, the official mouthpiece of the Yankees front office mafia. Kay referenced “The Book” and the fact that Torre batted Alex Rodriguez 8th in the post-season for one game. (For the record, both Torre and A-Rod said that neither would have refused to talk, although A-Rod was more flippant: “I don’t really have anything to say”.)
Kim Jones and Michael Kay chose to put over Yankees icon Don Mattingly as future Dodgers manager and the “future”. They pretty much speculated that this will be Joe Torre’s last year as a manager before retiring, and they set up Mattingly as his successor. Considering how Mattingly mistakenly believed he would be in the position to take over the reigns of the Yankees instead of Joe Girardi, I hope they’re right, because Donnie has a tendency to get very angry when misled.
I expect FOX and ESPN, two national news MEDIA outlets, to really get into the heart of the Joe Torre vs The Yankees storyline Saturday and Sunday nights. YESNetwork dropped the ball. Although eventually Michael Kay mentioned Joe Torre, it was mostly company line stuff, in addition to saying “this is just a regular game, folks”. Sorry, Michael..it wasn’t just a normal game, this was New York’s former icon Joe Torre managing against his former team for the first time. This was seeing Don Mattingly coaching against the Yankees.
Michael Kay and the Yankees hierarchy have no class. All of the great quotes putting over Joe Torre as an icon and a great human being from Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Joe Girardi, and even Joba Chamberlain had to be found elsewhere, and not during the 3-hour game. The Yankees organization has not forgiven Joe Torre for writing his book.
Whose side are you going to take?
Anyway, the actual game was FANTASTIC. It was a very close 2-1 game, in which CC Sabathia improved to 5-0 in June. He went 8 innings and Mariano Rivera struck out 3 men for his 17th save. A-Rod hit a HR (seemingly to get revenge against Joe Torre for writing the truth about the jerk in his book) and scored two runs.
There was a lot of heat between Vincente Padilla and CC Sabathia. Padilla had previously hit Mark Teixeira multiple times last year, and hit Robinson Cano last night. Padilla also was throwing breaking balls to CC when he was up to hit, instead of just throwing fastballs down the middle. (Announcer John Flaherty had previously said that pitchers have unwritten rules when facing each other in the National League, such as giving each other easy fastballs to hit in their 1st at bat.)
