Dallas Braden Fights A-Rod; Sabathia Loses

Dallas Braden said A-Rod disrespected him by running across the mound

Quick loss this afternoon for the Yankees, but they still took the A’s series. CC Sabathia once again got hometown jitters in Oakland. It’s amazing though- although CC has no control of his pitches (6 walks) he still only gave up 4 runs in an 8-inning complete game.

I FINALLY saw a  Yankees TRIPLE-PLAY live! It was the first Yankees triple play since 1968. A-Rod to Cano to Nick Johnson. Kurt Suzuki, who hit a 3-run HR off CC in the 1st, managed to ground out into the triple play, so that was cool.

However the story of the day was Dallas Braden- he is a young lefty who has an 87-MPH fastball and a 75-MPH changeup, and the Yankees were off-balance all day. I happen to know a college-level pitcher at BCC who has the same stuff, so maybe there is hope for him to make the bigs one day. The A’s showed why they have some wins under their belt this season- pitching. After Dallas Braden allowed 2 runs in 6 innings, the submariner (and stat head icon) Brad Ziegler pitched 2 scoreless innings, and 2009 Rookie of the Year Andre Bailey got the easy save.

The game did have controversy: Dallas Braden shouted at A-Rod between innings after A-Rod walked across the pitcher’s mound after Robbie Cano hit a foul ball instead of just retracing his steps back to first base like everyone else does.  Braden was all over A-Rod- shouting very loud, and he threw his glove in the dugout. A-Rod pulled a Hulk Hogan and cupped his ear, and waved him off like “Who are you, kid?”

Braden:

[A-Rod] should probably take a note from his captain over [Derek Jeter] there and realize you don’t cross the pitcher’s mound in between an inning or during the game. I was just dumbfounded that he would let that slip his mind — being someone of such status. The guy was tasting himself too long to apologize. It’s a shame. I have a lot of respect for the guy and everything he’s done for the game. I admire the kind of talent like that — it’s just disappointing when you see the other side of things.

It’s pretty much baseball etiquette. It’s an extremely classy organization, the best in the business. I was trying to convey to him that I’m still out there, the ball is in my hand, and it’s my pitcher’s mound. If he wants to run across the pitcher’s mound, tell him to go do laps in the bullpen.”

“I don’t go over there and run laps at third base. I don’t spit over there. I stay away. He ran across the pitcher’s mound, foot on my rubber. “

And A-Rod’s response:

“He just told me to get off his mound. That was a little surprising. I’d never quite heard that, especially from a guy that has a handful of wins in his career. I didn’t even know he was talking to me. I’ve never heard of that in my career. I still don’t know. I thought it was pretty funny, actually.”

MY INITIAL OPINION ON DALLAS BRADEN vs ALEX RODRIGUEZ (subject to change):

-Yes, it is a breach of etiquette for runners to cross the pitcher’s mound. If it was done in Bob Gibson’s day, A-Rod would be dead. For those who disagree with this unwritten rule, I guess you never played baseball at any level. You are told not to cut across the pitcher’s mound if you are walking back from a foul ball; you are supposed to retrace your steps on the baselines.

- Yes, it is very possible that A-Rod never heard of this, since he was pretty much born as a superstar and has no conception of stuff like this.

-Conversely, A-Rod may have done it on purpose to shake the kid up since the Yanks had Braden in the ropes at the time. That would be cool since A-Rod was intentionally trying to help the Yanks.

-Either way, A-Rod was unprofessional as usual (remember he hit Bronson Arroyo’s glove in the Red Sox series in 2004 and shouted at the Blue Jay’s Howie Clark and made him drop the ball in 2007). Just shows you that A-Rod is a Miami ghetto boy even with all his millions and his talent.

If they would have done nothing, the economy would have rebounded on it's own, and perhaps faster without this massive debt the yo-yo has saddled us with. Was that "pitch" he threw a fastball? Looked like a pitch he must have learned from Larry Sinclair. Much like something a girl would throw at a soft ballgame.

A Rod won't play in the National League, and definitly not for the Dodgers since it looks like Joe Torre will be their new manager.

You must be kidding? The A’s have the best rotation in baseball? So you’re saying that Trevor Cahill, Dallas Braden, Gio Gonzalez, Brandon McCarthy, and Brett Anderson are better than Roy Halladay (best pitcher in baseball), Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton? I’m sorry, but that argument is idiotic. The A’s don’t have the rotation or the offense to win the division, the Rangers don’t have the pitching after losing Lee and keeping Felix in the bullpen. The Rangers also lost Vlad, have an aging Beltre, and a disgruntled Michael Young. The Angels win this division by 3-4 games since you know Seattle will be a disaster as always. Lastly, you can’t seriously think the Braves will beat out the Phillies in the NL east can you?

Red Sox signed Crawford and just took Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego. I guess they will play for free?

All A-Rod apologists have gone into hiding now.

      Long live Dallas Braden!

You’ve missed the point, YankeechickII. Don’t worry however, my wife says the fastest route from 3rd to 1st is across the pitchers mound so your in good company. Now if I can just get my pre-school girls to stop cutting through the neighbors yard – they can’t read and don’t understand tresspassing ettiquette. Secondly, you are validating that it’s ok for him to do because Braden is “unknown”. By your Braden comment, you are implying that it matters whose on the mound. By the way, I had the opportunity to visit the old Yankee Stadium ONCE! Yes, it was David Cone’s Perfect Game vs. the Expos. My wife and I were living in DC at the time and visiting good friends of ours who were living on Long Island. My buddy’s wife wanted to leave during the rain delay. My buddy said, “are you f’ing kidding, it’s a perfect game”. Classic.

actually YES it is a rule that you cant stomp on your neighbors garden- no tresspassing. a-rod did nothing wrong. who is dallas braden anyway? he has no fastball, and you know what they say with guys who cant throw a fastball…lol

I have to laugh that someone actually went to look-up an “unwritten” rule. Is it written down that I shouldn’t run across my neigbors vegetable garden? How about a little bit of respect. I have NEVER seen any player EVER run across the mound in professional baseball – at any level. Now that said, your reactions would be way different if Manny Ramirez trotted across the mound with Petite was pitching.

Don’t be surprised at Yankee fan behavior defending A-Roid. They have always had the ability to turn a blind eye towards anything a Yankee punk does.

A-Rod looked very gay with his dismissal with a wave of the hand at Braden.

I’m surprised more of the Yankees fan base wouldn’t hold their star more accountable. Respect the game, no matter who is pitching.

A-Rod deserves a fastball in his windpipe and maybe than he will respect opposing pitchers.

A-Rod has already had incidents on the field where opposing players have called him out for bush league antics. If it was the first time it ever happened. Wen a player has a history of these types of antics on the field, one does not often give the benefit of the doubt.

As per MLB.com there is no unwritten rule in place. As for Braden’s reaction, it was clearly off the wall, immature, and unprofessional. This will be the only time Dallas Braden will make national news.

What is an unwritten rule?? braden needs all the press he can get. after all, what he has in front of him is the standard career of an A’s pitcher: three or four very bright years followed by being excessively paid to underachieve for a team outside of oakland followed then by a career cut short by a shredded elbow or shoulder. baseball is filled with Billy Beanes wreckage.

If there was something good to say about the soon to be San Jose A’s, their team, their stadium, or their city, I would have already said it. They suck and everything else about them too!

A’s fan here again…Braden isn’t a rookie (just for clarification) and you never would have heard of Scott Brosious either if he hadn’t have gone to the Yankees. Baseball Tonight tried to egg on Braden last night by asking “what if” it had been Cano or Swisher. Idiots. The fact is that A-Rod is about as polarizing as George Bush but more arrogant. As a life-time West Coaster, I can’t stand the Yankees or Redsox but the difference is…I respect the Yankee organization. I can totally see A-Rod walking across my line on the green before I putt!

If it were anybody other than Arod, he wouldnt have the same reaction. If it were pujols for example, Braden wouldnt of went nuts. Pipe down rookie.

Perhaps, but that’s a bit hypothetical using another player in the scenario. I agree the kid should have used other ways to communicate the matter to A-Rod, but I did enjoy the testosterone outbursts.

This “thing” about Braden vs A-Rod would be a good “middle card” on Smackdown w.w.e.
But i really never heard of a player actually walking on the pitchers mound. What if A-Rod did it when Clemens was pitching?
Remember Mike Piazza? Oh well folks, we did see a triple play!
