Secret Confessions from a Yankees Fan (2010)

Confessions of Yankees Fan

Some 2010 Yankees Worrisome Thoughts

  1. I don’t have Spring Training fever yet even though we’ve been a week into it because the Yankees are the defending champions. This offseason was the shortest ever thanks to the late November games, and I wanted more time to bask in the glory of winning.
  2. The Yankees accomplished EVERYTHING last year- they ran away with the division title, and managed to defeat the pesky Twins, the impossible Angels, and the powerhouse Phillies. 2009 was perfect, and it will be hard to repeat that, even though the MEDIA is expecting the Yankees to repeat.
  3. I find it hard to swallow that a billion dollar organization like the Yankees really couldn’t give Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui what they wanted, and I think when push comes to shove the Yanks lost great workers who have not been replaced in terms of raw production.
  4. There seems to be a growing Internet stat head community that defends all of Brian Cashman’s moves. I believe the good folks over at NoMaas.org kinda spearheaded it, and made Cashman a celebrity of sorts. I also believe the stat head community totally sees me as a mark or rube for caring about Godzilla and Damon being discarded.
  5. Melky Cabrera being traded for Javy Vazquez is a crock. Michael Kay, Kim Jones, and other YESNetwork company people have approved this move. WFAN approved the move. Stat heads approved the moves. But true Yankees fans know that Vazquez is a Jeff Weaver type when it comes to pitching in New York. Another NY bust, Kenny Rogers, was able to salvage his reputation outside of NY, with the Tigers.
  6. The Yanks were able to get a lot of mileage from Andy Pettitte and AJ Burnett last year, but Burnett is injury prone and Andy needs to be watched as well. I have a feeling that Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will somehow both be in the rotation at some point during the season, which begs the question: how will the Yankees get their stamina up in-season if one or both start the season in the bullpen. The same question goes for Alfredo Aceves, Chad Gaudin, and Sergio Mitre. Real life isn’t like Diamond Mind Baseball where you can plug in pitchers based on their season stamina rating, as we’ve seen last year with the Joba Chamberlain fiasco.
  7. Right now, I don’t get how the Yanks can have so many outfielders, and I wonder who will get cut. I check out the Yankees interviews every day on the YESNetwork, and it seems that all of the outfielders believe they will be on the roster as opposed to AAA. In addition to Nick Swisher, Curtis Granderson, and Brett Gardner, the Yanks have Randy Winn, Jamie Hoffman, and Marcus Thames. I have to assume Thames will be cut, but he seems awfully confident about his role. It’s amazing how many guys were needed to replace Johnny Damon, huh?
  8. Pitching bullpens are the most inconsistent aspect of any component of a team. The Yankees bullpen was fantastic last year. I’ve never seen a team duplicate such a feat for a second year. Why did Cashman sign Chan Ho Park, who “overachieved” last year, and is also bound to regress to the mean?

Yankees are known for "lurking in the weeds" to negotiate a player's price upwards so their competitors have to pay more than something "reasonable". If the Yankees were really interested in Bay, they would have him by now – and at their price.
They just want other teams to over pay – with the player and his agent reaping the benefits.

Add: Salty – I respect your viewpoints, but I'll stay with my position on this. If Yankees do sign Bay, I'll come around to your way of thinking.

Wow, someone is REALLY reaching here.

First off: People say the Yanks "buy" titles because they go out and spend more money than anyone else does on the biggest free agents out there. I believe the money they spent this year on CC, Texiera and Burnett than some teams have tied up in their entire pitching staff.

Secondly: Trades and free agency are part of the game, teams for years have made trades at the deadlines to bolster their rosters.

Finally, half of the players on both teams that you wrote down, are soon to be washed up or role players at best. But if you break down what the teams paid for each individual player, you can understand why people hate on the Yanks.

They are just able/willing to spend more on free agents and to retain their own than anyone else out there.

Edit: Boston is getting just as bad as New York. Just wait until Morneau and Mauer of the Twins become free agents in a year or two.

Edit2: Again, someone has a man crush on the Yankees.
