Brian Cashman Interview: No More Joba Rules
Brian Cashman has nonchalantly said that Joba Chamberlain will not have a inning limit in 2010. This was said during a rather lengthy interview with the YesNetwork, in which the main topic was Johnny Damon leaving the Yankees. The irony is that my prediction came true: Cashman and Joe Girardi will have Joba fight for the #5 spot in the starting rotation with Phil Hughes, Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, and Alfredo Aceves. Having key players duke it out has been Yankees policy since Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes bombed in 2008 after being awarded guaranteed spots.
However, I also said that Kim Jones and Michael Kay seem to know that this Hughes vs Joba contenst is simply a formality, and that Joba Chamberlain will be the 5th starter, no matter what. I mean, logically, if Cashman has loosened the handcuffs from Joba, why would he be a setup man? Even worse, why eliminate Joba Rules if Joba will start the season as a relief pitcher, and be “stretched out” again as a starter.
Girardi has officially said on WFAN that the Yankees will make the final decision after around 5 Spring Training Starts. After that, each player will be assigned their roles and work on their stamina and mindset.
In other words, it appears that the Joba debate will NOT go away.
Will Phil Hughes be groomed as the heir apparent to Mariano Rivera? Will Brian Cashman use Joba or Hughes as leverage in contract negotiates with Mariano Rivera?
Between this and Derek Jeter’s contract going up, there is sure to be a lot of speculation and trash talking about how the Yankees should be run in 2010.
Can’t wait.

WOW! I think Joba rules should have been done away with two years ago! He is such a baby. He is in the big leagues now so start being treated as such. Maybe with his life/job on the line, Joba will do better and try harder this season. There are alot of players right in back of him waiting to pick up the ball and pitch!
