Cubs Hire Greg Maddux as Scout
Chicago Cubs GM Jim Hendry is excited to have Greg Maddux sign up with the Cubs’ front office.
“I see him fulfilling a tremendous variety of roles,” Hendry said. “When we discussed him coming aboard he was very adamant about the fact that he wanted to be a very productive employee. This isn’t a personal services contract or ’show up at an appearance and sign balls’ situation. This is something Greg really wants to sink his teeth into. He’ll help our minor league people at every level and he’ll evaluate and assist [assistant general manager Randy Bush] in trades. He’ll have input at all levels of our organization, including our big league staff.”
With the news announced, Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox assumes Greg Maddux will one day become a field manager:
“You tell Greg if he’s going to manage I’d like to be his bench coach.”
MEANWHILE, Tom Glavine is still waiting for the Atlanta Braves’s front office to approach him to have a press conference to announce his retirement. Glavine, who had a falling out with the Braves last year, wants to work in the front office, too, in a similiar capacity that Maddux has with the Cubs. But negotiations have been tough. (The Cubs have treated Maddux with class, but the Braves GM and ownership has been skewed.)
As it stands now, both Maddux and Glavine will be on the Hall of Fame ballot together in 2014.
