Yankees Trade Melky Cabrera for JAVIER VAZQUEZ! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Homer Javy is BACK in the Bronx! That’s like the Yankees getting back Jose Contreras, Kevin Brown, Jeff Weaver, or Kenny Rogers. Melky Cabrera for JAVIER VAZQUEZ! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I guess Brian Cashman wanted an “innings eater”, so he traded Melky and prospect Mike Dunn (remember him from September?) to the ATLANTA BRAVES for Vazquez. The Yankess also got left hander relief pitcher Mike Logan (scrub) as a throw in.

Okay, now that my emotions are out: What does the Javier Vazquez trade (Gosh, I can’t even type that without laughing) mean for the Yankees now?

It means LEFT FIELD is WIDE OPEN for Jason Bay, Matt Holliday, Johnny Damon, or Brett Gardner and Jamie Hoffman (yeah right).

It means that either JOBA CHAMBERLAIN or PHIL HUGHES will be banished to the bullpen as a setup man for Mariano Rivera in 2010.

It means that Robinson Cano will be lonely now without his best friend in the whole wide world, the Yankees good luck charm Melky Cabrera.

Yes, folks “JAVIER VAZQUEZ IS BACK IN PINSTRIPES!” NoOoOOoOoOOOOoOOOoOO!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Stay tuned, folks, because Brian Cashman is not finished yet.

    Vahl here.

Here's the link to my video comment, completely uploaded: http://qik.ly/vwSP

As Damian and I have discovered, the livestream is smooth, but the upload of the video afterwards buffers like crazy until the upload completes. That's right: qik does not record the livestream — it's recorded on your phone and uploaded afterwards. The livestream broadcasts live, but is not recorded by qik.com, the way talkshoe records the podcasts.

As for Javy Vasquez … here's a list of similar pitchers through age 32 from baseball-reference.com:

    Similar Pitchers through 32
    View Player Links in Pop-up
    Compare Stats to Similars
    Livan Hernandez (928)
    Andy Benes (927)
    Brad Radke (922)
    Camilo Pascual (906)
    Mike Moore (903)
    Dennis Eckersley (901) *
    Jim Clancy (896)
    Joe Coleman (896)
    Mark Gubicza (892)
    Darryl Kile (891)

So, bottom line, he's a solid #4 or #5 guy who occasionally has flashes of brilliance. Since last year was an up year for the guy, we can expect an ERA bordering on 5 from him, particularly pitching in the New Yankee Stadium.

I guess if it improves the bullpen, with Joba or Phil setting for Mo?

I hope Cano finds a new friend … I think he'd get along with JASON BAY.

I TOTALLY agree with your stats, Vahl.

We got a solid backend guy, and we will get a better leftfielder.

    Amen, brother!

I am one that does NOT believe in intangibles, so I don't care about his alleged hang up with NY and giving up homeruns in clutch situations. I mean, Kyle Farnsworth did great for the Yanks.

And Melky's clutch ability was OVERRATED.

Thanks, Vahl. I will remember your post when Javy pitches this year.

In fact, I made copies of this post for prosperity.

Very glad to be on the same page as you on this one.

If the Yanks get Jason Bay, we're talking REPEAT in 2010 and THREE-PEAT in 2011.

    ??? Why the sarcasm, Statshead?

Vahl said Homerun JAvy will have an ERA of around 5 pitching at New Yankee Stadium.

That's not what I would call a ringing endorsement.

Frankly, pitchers with ERAs of 5 don't last long playing in New York.

Can't wait when Javier Vazquez becomes the loooooong man (a la Ron Darling Mets at the end).

Brian Cashman is a bit stubborn when it comes to reclaimation projects- he was on the record that he didn't want to trade Javy for Randy Johnson back in the day, and Cashman never approved of the way Mel Stottlemeyre couched Javy.

So Cash has appointed Dave Eiland to make sure Javy takes his turn and does his job every start.

Should be interesting, although it would have bee great to see both Joba and Hughes become two aces in 2010.

    Vahl here.

I suggest you watch the video, Stat-head … oh, never mind. If there's any way I can help you appear stupid, I'm happy to oblige.

Just to clarify for the rest of the readership: I HATE this trade, and I do believe in intangibles.

  5. Stats Head on December 22, 2009 at 9:36 am

I wasn't being sarcastic; this move makes the Yanks stronger.

What? DO you believe the MEDIA would influence Javier Vazquez and make him choke?

  6. Damian Hospital on December 22, 2009 at 9:37 am

Yep, Vahl's live video explained everything.

  7. Stats Head on December 22, 2009 at 9:38 am

I heard the video; Diamond Mind Baseball says this was a good deal.

Like I said, I agree with what Vahl said: Yanks will get stronger in LF and they get 180-200+ innings in the 5th spot. What?

  8. DailySkewCoFounder on December 22, 2009 at 9:38 am

Vahl here — unless Javy has stopped watching ESPN Sportscenter, YES. The MSM MEDIA will are in his mind already, broadcasting highlights and lowlights 24/7.

  9. DailySkewCoFounder on December 22, 2009 at 9:39 am

Vahl — aaaaannnd they haven't signed a left fielder yet. Don't count your chickens before they hatch, Stat-head.

  10. Damian Hospital on December 22, 2009 at 9:40 am

As Vahl said, he HOPES Javy can rebound like Kenny Rogers rebounded with the Tigers in 2006.

  11. Stats Head on December 22, 2009 at 9:42 am

Yeah, 'cause Brett Gardner sucks- he can't hit lefties and he has no power. At least Jamie Hoffman has a good glove.

  12. Jayme on December 22, 2009 at 10:16 am

I cannot believe this horrible news about Melky being traded!
Say it ain't so Brian! What makes your sick mind work?
MELKY, he helped the yanks in so many ways, and in the world series!
    He will be sorely missed!

DailySkew Fun Fact of the Day:

Melky Cabrera is 24 years old.

Bernie Williams was 27 years old when he developed HR power.

    Just sayin'.

  14. Bill J. on December 22, 2009 at 6:02 pm

How about Brett Gardner batting .291/.381 vs lefties in 2009?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  15. Barry Allen on December 22, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Since 2000, Vazquez has recorded at least 10 wins and 150 strikeouts each season, making him the 10th pitcher in Major League history to accomplish the feat. Eight of the other nine pitchers are in the Hall of Fame.

Javy has been a Top 30 pitcher every year since he came up.

I predict the Yankees will win 110 games this year now.

    It isn't fair.
