Nothing in baseball can be predicted at the game level: “anything can happen”. However, let’s examine what to expect:
The Yankees and Phillies both want to score early because of Mariano Rivera. The Yanks want to make this a 7-inning game, by taking the lead and giving it to Mo; the Phillies want to have the lead by then so Mo becomes a non-factor.
Boston Red Sox 11 x 14 Pedro Martinez Mounted Print
The problem with wanting to score early and actually scoring early all depends on how sharp Andy Pettitte and Pedro Martinez are, and how much the hitters are pressing. Pettitte and Martinez, both future Hall of Famers, are at the final stages of their careers and it’s most likely that at most they can give 6 full innings tonight. If both teams are tied, it will be a battle of the bullpens.
World Series storylines:
Keep in mind FOX stands to earn an extra $20 million dollars if there is a World Series Game 7, so Tim McCarver and Joe Buck will be rooting for the Phillies.
Chase Utley has a chance to break Reggie Jackson’s World Series HR record.
Pedro Martinez + New York = excitiment and controversy
Andy Pettitte 3-day’s rest: how will he feel?
One thing that is easy to lose sight of: this is actually a historic pitching matchup even though both pitchers no longer have the stamina or the fastball- Pedro Martinez is not only a Yankees villain, but he easily had the best peak performance of any pitcher in the modern era before he ruined his career with the Mets. Andy Pettitte has racked up amazing career numbers and is one of the best pitchers in Yankees franchise history, and one of the original Four Horseman left with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada.
This may be a World Series Game 6 that everyone remembers.
