With all of the hate and frustration that umpires get from fans, players, and the MEDIA in 2009, let’s step into the time machine to 1909, where journeyman Dave Altizer was a victim of a joke by his third base coach (Nick Altrock), opposing players, AND the homeplate umpire.
After you read this story (as told by the umpire) ask yourself: when did MLB get so darn serious? This story from 1909 would never happen in 2009 because players and umpires have been trained to be politically correct and to stay in their expected roles. Bud Selig would probably reprimand and fine the players, coach, and umpire for this prank in 2009. Some may believe this story reflects an ugly part of baseball history- it shows a bunch of guys acting like amateurs and clowning around, but on the other hand it really shows some personality and is harmless entertainment. Bob is totally right. A lot of youth umpires will do this because they are new to umping and don't know the rule. Also, many young umpires are harrassed constantly by managers, coaches, fans, and even players because of their age. People believe they can walk all over a youth umpire because a youth will not stand up to an audult where as an older more experienced umpire will. The reason for him doing this may be to show everyone that he is a good ump and can get all the judgement calls right which is not all umping is about. Chances are he probably had a worse view than the base ump making the call.
Im pretty sure plays does mean the number of times youve listened to the songs… the reason they are lower than you think is probably because you havent listened to the song all of the way through… you need to go right up to a couple of seconds from the end ive found..
Hope thats helped you :) x
