Rays beat Pettitte; Twins Tigers TIED with one more game left; GMs fired

And so Andy Pettitte finishes 2009 with a 14-8, 4.16 ERA and 194.2 innings pitched. By the way, remember the controversy surrounding Andy Pettitte’s contract? Brian Cashman forced him to sign a $5.5 million base salary and he was supposed to be a 4th starter. Based on Andy’s innings pitched and the fact that he was not on the DL, Andy will make around $10 million this year, almost doubling his base salary.

Yesterday’s Rays-Yankees game felt like a Spring Training game so it’s a shame Andy was tagged with the loss.
By the way, Eric Hinkse sucked at 3B defense last night, so I doubt we’ll be seeing him playing 3B in the post-season. On a positive note, Aceves and Gaudin did great in relief.

Well, the Yankees first round opponent is still undecided- it could be the Twins, who are led by Carl Pavano today vs the Royals, or the Tigers, who are led by their ace Justin Verlander against the White Sox. This is very good for the Yankees- both the Twins and Tigers are going ALL OUT to win today (and they may force game 163 for a face-to-face tie-breaker) so the victor will not have their best pitcher out there for Game 1 against the Yanks.

Two GMs were fired (thankfully):

The San Diego Padres finally divorced Kevin Towers after 14 inglorious years. The Padres ownership is one of the worst in baseball and Towers tried his hardest but the Padres continue to be one of the worst baseball franchises in the game.

The Toronto Blue Jays- to no one’s surprise- dumped computer whiz GM JP Ricciardi after dealing with his crazy contract signings, and snobby ant-social management skills for the last 6 years. JP was an understudy to GM Billy Beane in Oakland, and was one of the many “young hot studs” with a baseball statistics background from Bill James, like Boston’s Theo Epstein and Cleveland’s Marc Shapiro. The big joke is that with all of these “geniuses” they 1) Have poor interpersonal skills and 2) Really aren’t that great when it comes to consistent results year after year. It’s pretty funny how Brian Cashman’s teams (except for 2008) make the post-season year after year.
