I ran my Diamond Mind Baseball computer simulation to replay the 2002 American League Division series to see if the Yankees could defeat the 2002 Anaheim Angels. In real life, the Angels went on to win the 2002 World Series, and easily disposed of the Yankees in the first round ALDS. Manager Damian Hospital created a different starting pitching staff and lineups than what Joe Torre had used. Here are the results:

Game 1: Jarrod Washburn vs David “Boomer” Wells @ Yankee Stadium: The battle of the two lefties resulted in Wells coming through big time, while Washburn gave up 6 runs in 2 innings. The Yanks pounded 15 hits, and stars of the game were Jorge Posada, Shane Spencer, Jason Giambi, Ron Coomer, catcher Chris Widger, and Alfonso Soriano. Wells went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs. Mopup man Jeff Weaver gave up 3 runs in 2 innings. YANKEES WIN 9-5.

Game 2: Kevin Appier vs “The Moose” Mike Mussina @ Yankee Stadium: Mike Mussina and Steve Karsay stumbled towards the end of the game, but the Yanks were losing 4-2 anyway. Appier had his A-Game and K-Rod made his postseason debut by pitching 2.2 innings of hitless ball for the save. The Angels hit 5 home runs. ANGELS WIN 8-2

Game 3: Andy Pettite vs Ramon Ortiz @ Angels Stadium: This was a tight game that was decided in the 6th inning when Gil and Erstad had two RBI off Pettitte. The Yankees hitting star was John Vander Wal. Earlier Soriano had a costly error that led to two Angels runs. Ramiro Mendoza had 3 scoreless innings in this Yankees loss. K-Rod, Weber, and Troy Percival closed it out. ANGELS WIN 5-3

Game 4: “The Rocket” Roger Clemens vs John Lackey @ Angels Stadium: The Yankees are on the brink of elimination, and manager Damian Hospital gave the ball to The Rocket to try and bring the series back to NY. Clemens and Lackey both went 6 strong innings and left with the score tied 2-2, where it then became a battle of the bullpens. Mike Stanton and Mariano Rivera defeated Weber and Percival the rest of the way as Derek Jeter got a clutch RBI double in the 9th inning. There will be a Game 5. YANKEES WIN 3-2

Game 5: Rematch- Jarrod Washburn vs. David Wells @ Yankee Stadium: Early homeruns by Troy Glaus and Scott Spiezo gave the Angels a 3-0 lead, but the Yanks clawed back thanks to a clutch hit by automatic out Rondell White to make it 4-2, but the Angels busted loose off of Ramiro Mendoza to make the score 7-2. The Yanks tried to come back as Robin Ventura answered with a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 8th. The Yanks had the tying run on base in the 9th but Troy Percival struck out Jason Giambi for the save. ANGELS WIN 7-5
