Why did the 2009 Yankees improve from the 2008 Yankees?

Now that the 2009 MLB season is winding down, lets’s take a look at why the 2009 Yankees are so much better than the 2008 Yankees: Just from the statistical point of view: quite simply, the pitching is better and the the hitters stayed healthy and productive.

Here’s a list of Yankees players who improved from 2008 to 2009 (note- new acquisitions are not listed):
Andy Pettitte
Phil Hughes
Robinson Cano
Derek Jeter
Hideki Matsui
Jorge Posada
Melky Cabrera
Brett Gardner

And let’s compare replacements
2009 Nick Swisher is comparable to 2008 Bobby Abreu
2009 CC Sabathia is an ace like 2008 Mike Mussina
2009 A.J. Burnett is better than anything the Yanks had after Moose and Andy
2009 Joba Chamberlain is still better than guys like Rasner and Ponson
2009 Mark Teixeira is better than 2008 Jason Giambi
