John Flaherty YES Network announcer
John Flaherty- love him or hate him- and I know most of you hate him, dropped a little tidbit during a Yankees game he was announcing. Flaherty, who was Randy Johnson’s personal catcher in both of their brief runs in New York, said that Randy was NEVER happy. He said pitching was a struggle for Randy and it took all of his energy and mental prowess to succeed. He said Randy on the mound was the same as Randy off the mound- a serious guy who wasn’t laid back or jolly; he never had any fun.
Al Leiter said that when Al was teammates with Kevin Brown with the Marlins that Brown hated himself even if he gave up a 1-hit shutout. Leiter said that Brown pitched as good as anyone he had ever seen but Brown never had a good time. All of his time was spend preparing and then sulking.
Both stories about these players jive with Joe Torre’s thoughts on those players in Joe’s book.
