Mark Teixeira’s clutch HR lifts Yanks over Seattle
I stayed up until 1:00AM for this one- Andy Pettitte was pitching too well to give up on him. The first inning or so, the umpire was squeezing Andy, and he was visibly frustrated- he threw the sunflower seeds all over the dugout. His pitch count was way high too early. But Andy beared down, and got his cutter to move: the result: 10K in 6 IP, with only 1 BB and 2 runs. The game was a 2-2 deadlock, and the Yanks did the small things to scratch those two runs, especially with A-Rod out.
Brian Bruney seems to be back as he had yet another scoreless outing. Phil Hughes had a weird 8th: started with 2K, but then the Mariners worked 2 counts full and walked before Phil struck out the side.
In the 9th inning, I was praying for somebody to score since I couldn’t handle extra innings on the West Coast, and Mark Teixeira answered with a solo HR. For some reason, Mark is beginning to remind me of Will Clark’s leadership aura and clutch hitting.
Robby Cano extended his 12-game hitting streak in the 9th, with 2 strikes on him. Nick Swisher added a clutch insurance run to help Mariano Rivera relax in the 9th (his shoulder is still bad; his MPH is down). Mo leads the AL in Saves! Final score 4-2.
By the way, Andy Pettitte’s son was sitting next to him in the dugout after Andy was done. I wish his son would follow him everywhere if that’s what Andy needs. Andy really reached into something extra last night- very gutsy game.
