Jason Giambi fired by A’s

The Oakland A’s released 38-year old Jason Giambi today. Here are parts of General Manager Billy Beane’s press release:

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have released Jason Giambi, the five-time American League All-Star and 2000 AL Most Valuable Player who batted .193 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI in 83 games this season before being placed on the Disabled List July 20.

However, Giambi was placed on the 15-day DL July 20 with a strained right quad. At the time he went on the DL, he had the lowest batting average in the majors and fourth lowest slugging percentage in the American League (.364).

Giambi made $125,058,996 in his baseball career. It’s unfortunate that his legacy as one of the game’s sluggers and on base percentage stats has been tarnished due to steroids and BALCO, which in turn lead to injuries these past few years.

Even with all the bad stuff about Jason, I liked him as the Yankees 1B just because of his larger than life personality and never-say-die attitude.
