Joba Chamberlain is back. After heading back home to Nebraska during the All-Star break, getting away from the big city with its trashy newspapers, Snapshot Joe radio station, and the Message Board Mutants, Joba cleared his head, and worked with pitching coach Dave Eiland on a hitch in his delivery. So far the New Joba is 2-0, and can go 7 innings. He has been expressing himself on the mound, too.
Unfortunately things are about to get controversial and distracting as Brian Cashman reiterated that Joba Chamberlain has a season innings pitched limit. Rumors are that this limit is around 140-150 innings including the post-season. This is because of an unknown sabermetric study that shows pitchers need to increase their workload by 40 innings per year until they get to 200 innings. Last year Joba threw around 100. He already has over 100 innings pitched, so we are looking at less that 10 starts left for Joba. Joe Girardi and Cashman are mum regarding if Joba would head back to the bullpen or just sit it out.
I think this was always in the back of Joba’s mind: the more innings he pitched per game, the less his season would be. It’s very possible Girardi would have taken Joba out after 5 innings earlier in the season even if Joba threw 85 pitches instead of 100.
Phil Coke pitched the 8th, and Dave Robertson, who hadn’t pitched in 12 days, had problems mopping the game up (2 runs in the 9th).
Anyway, the Yankees’ bats were in full force last night as they defeated the Oakland A’s who had just traded their best hitter Matt Holliday to the Cardinals. (Oakland GM Billy Beane has to be the most overrated baseball GM). Derek Jeter and Melky Cabrera had 3 hits each, and Jorge Posada hit a HR, as the Yankees won 8-3.
