I have been a huge John Sterling fan sine Day One. I know millions of people on the internet think I’m an idiot for liking him; I don’t care. I’m not alone.
Anyway, Phil Mushnick from the tabloid New York Post actually wrote an article nitpicking the play-by-play errors from John Sterling’s radio broadcast and implied that Sterling is intentionally misleading listeners about what is happening on the field.
Mushnick called for John to be phased out by the Yankees.
Here are some quotes from Phil attacking John personally:
“Sterling’s on-air demeanor remains smug, haughty, condescending.”“…a man who has always cherished the sound of his own voice while placing strained self-promotion over good-faith play-by-play”
Phil then listed a handful of “mistakes” [mostly HR calls, double plays, errors] from the Yankees-Twins 4-game series (over 12 hours worth of play-by-play.
Most internet surfers jumped on the bandwagon and attacked John, and asked for his removal. Since the Yankees are, and will continue to be, the most hated team in baseball, it’s no wonder that fans don’t like the Yankees biggest fan in the broadcasting booth.
For what it’s worth some Yankees fans are embarrassed of John Sterling’s rooting for the hometeam, but for me, I’ll take him any day of the week.
Another reason why Sterling gets bashed by newspapers is because he attacks the MEDIA all the time, and is a “made man”, who has the Steinbrenner’s blessing to continue his work. John is not one of THEM (he will not jump on bandwagons and attack steroid users), and they hate it.

mushnick is a yankees hater. he always has been. every article i've ever read hates on them. he's much kinder to the mets. he's a bigger fraud than he claims sterling is

Sterling will give the opposing team credit if they are catching or
pitching well that day! He gets excited when we get a home run and
expresses his feelings because we
radio listeners get to “see” the game being played through his eyes!
