Cashman: Cody Ransom to take A-Rod’s place
Who will replace A-Rod? Right now, Brian Cashman and Joe Girardi are publicly content with giving Cody Ransom the first shot. After all, Johnny Damon says Cody is the best athlete on the team. Yeah. Look, this is no attack on Cody. He’s a nice guy. He paid his dues and was never given a chance. He’s the type of guy you root for. But come on. He has never showed he’s capable of hitting at the MLB level. He just got hot against righties last year in a few games.
So, assuming the Yankees have no minor leaguers who can fill the void until A-Rod returns in May/June, who’s out there for a 2-3 month rental?
Two older free agents come to mind:
Ray Durham (unemployed)- the 37-year old ex-White Sox and Giants 2B batted .289/.380 last year. Granted, he never played 3B, but for 2-3 months how bad could he be?
Mark Grudzielanek (unemployed)- the 38 year old veteran infielder was at .299/.345 for the Royals last year in 86 games.
As far as trades go:
The Marlins Dallas McPherson is on their 40 man roster in the minor leagues and the former #1 draft pick for the Angels never made it as a prospect.
Chone Figgins of the Angels will become a free agent after next season. He’s the fast guy that looks like Willie Randolph and is a Yankees killer. He would be a great addition as a backup infielder.
As far a totally thinking outside the box:
Mark Teixeira can play 3B as an emergency for a couple of months. Nick Swisher plays 1B. Hideki Matsui is DH. Johnny Damon in LF. Xavier Nady in RF. Brett Gardner in CF.

I endorse trading for Figgins, signing a veteran who can hit, or moving TeXEira to 3rd temporarily.
They don’t want to mess TeiXEira’s swing up by having him relearn 3B.
Yeah, but he’s an athlete. He can’t TRY?
Why settle for Cody Ransom? Cody is a below average replacement player.
It’s bad enough we have no-hit Molina and Kevin Cash as Jorge’s backup.
I am having 2nd thoughts about Cody Ransom. I cannot stand A Rod
as a human being, but he is suppose
to be the best athlete on 3rd base,
so let’s hope he gets well fast and
that his “so called replacement’s”
do not let the fans down!!
Opening day day has not arrived yet
and we have NO freaking 3rd baseman
with “great” skills!!
How many “drinks” did Damon have before making a statement like “Cody Ransom” is the teams best player?? HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
