Baseball news (March 18, 2009)

WBC: Team USA- thanks to a clutch performance by David Wright- slipped by Puerto Rico 6-5. The next matchup will be USA vs Venezuela. Due to injuries and motivation, the USA team is not a favorite.

In the other pool, Korea defeated Japan, who are not disgraced. Japan and Cuba will face each other to determine who will face Korea. The winner of that game will face the winner of USA/Venezuela.

You have to root for the Cuban National Baseball team. For the last 49 years they have finished 1st or 2nd in international baseball tournaments. If they do not beat Japan and Korea that streak will be broken. The Castro family does not tolerate 3rd or 4th place finishes.

Yankees: Mariano Rivera has 2 strikeouts and fielded an out in his first inning of work. He looked dominant….Robinson Cano has shoulder bursitis….Starting pitchers are all healthy.

Finally Employed: Sidney Ponson signed with the Royals (minor league deal)…Pudge Rodriguez signed up with the Houston Astros for 1 year/$1.5 million dollars. I guess his 2HR game for Puerto Rico in the WBC convinced the Astros he is still good.

career for him! But i don’t feel that sorry for old “pudge”..
