I finally finished the 2008 DMB Season Disk last night; the Yankees finished in last place at 76-86. 28 games behind. Yes, I said 28. In many ways, it felt like the real season, but Joe Girardi’s team actually did a whole lot better than that.
The Yanks’ team ERA was 4.75; the AL average was 4.37.
Here’s how the Yankees pitching staff finished in this computer simulation:
Mussina: 18-13, 3.52
Wang: 10-4, 3.20
Joba (mixed): 8-4, 3.58
Pettitte: 10-17, 6.11
Rasner: 3-12, 6.46
Aceves: 2-1, 4.97
Ponson: 2-5, 8.22
Pavano: 0-4, 6.34
Hughes: 1-5, 7.09
Kennedy: 1-3, 9.47
Giese (mixed): 1-3, 4.78
Igawa: 0-0, 9.00
Now that was ugly. Worse than real life, which means how lucky the Yanks were last year.
The bullpen was great:
Rivera: 6-5, 1.88, 34/40 Saves
Bruney: 3-1, 0.72
Marte: 1-0, 0.87
Coke: 2-0, 1.32
Britton: 1-0, 2.73
But had some underachievers:
Veras: 3-2, 6.07
Ohlendorf: 0-2. 7.71
Everyone else: Farnsworth, Hawkins, Edwar, Robertson, and others performed within their real-life range.
As far as hitters go, I had no bench to work with, and had no one to replace Jorge Posada’s bat.
Frankly, mostly everyone performed as expected based on last year’s stats, although most created slighly less runs.
Based on one of my favorite stats, RC27, only two players actually did better in this computer game:
Xavier Nady: .297/.349 18HR after his trade to the Yanks
“The Secret Cheat Character” Cody Random: .432/.510 5HR over 51 plate appearances
As far as the post-season goes:
Divisional Series
Rays beat Twins
Red Sox beat Angels
Cubs beat Phillies
Mets beat Rockies
Championship Series
Red Sox beat Rays
Mets beat Cubs
World Series
Red Sox beat Mets in Six
Awards
AL MVP: Aubrey Huff Rays .337/.403 36HR, 48 2B, 195H, 134RBI, 102R, 9.8 RC27, 1.015 OPS
AL Cy Young: Roy Halladay: 19-11, 2.82, .274 OB%, 1.03 walks, 7.1 K, 2.53 CERA
NL MVP: Albert Pujols Cardinals .343/.403, 50HR, 55 2B, 201H, 125RBI, 128R, 10.8R C27, 1.100 OPS
NL Cy Young: Johan Santana Mets 17-8, 2.80, .271 OB%, 2.2 walks, 8.2 K, 2.50 CERA
Out of curiosity I checked out four of the Yankees new acquitions this offseason, to see what DMB thought of them last year:
C.C. Sabathia: 12-6, 3.82, 2.7 walks, 9.1 K
A.J. Burnett: 11-16, 4.82, 3.5 walks, 9.4 K
Teixeira: .309/.387, 39HR, 139 RBI, 34 2B, 8.3 RC27, .969 OPS
Swisher: .227/.343, 22HR, 64 RBI, 18 2B, 4.9 RC27, .736 OPS
Anyway, a pretty depressing season in real life and in the Sim World.

Diamond go HARD!
Girardi will be wearing a “world series ring” in 2009 and your “Diamond Mind Baseball will
have much better results then!!
That’s right.
Whew! That was depressing!
However, this also seems to indicate that Girardi must be a great manager! This team and the Marlins both over-achieved for him!
