Don Mattingly Hall of Fame?
I’m still scratching my head about Don Mattingly being retconned into a guy who was good for 5 years and that’s it. Whereas Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry had off-the-field issues that prevented them from going to the Hall of Fame, Don Mattingly was the like second coming of Lou Gehrig when it came to being a team player and being someone who was focused on the game 100%. His peak was historic, and even when his back drained all of his power, he was still has good as Keith Hernandez (who was recognized as one of the best 1B in baseball), in my book.
I’m eating lunch, so I can’t “prove” any of this, nor can I present a “pro” and “con” argument, but Donnie Baseball was the best AL first baseman with his glove, even when injured. His career totals are just about equal to Kirby Puckett, who was a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, and who ended his career due to injury.
Believe me, I know all the reasons why Don is not going to the Hall, but seeing this cover from January 1987, just made me want to post this.

I don’t know why, either. He has my vote!
Yeah, it really seems the writers don’t consider his candidacy seriously at all. They just look at the HR and hit total, and that’s it, like Tim Raines.
If you had to draft Jim Rice or Don Mattingly knowing what you know now, who would you choose?
Bruce Sutter or Don Mattingly becomes laughable.
Mattingly was wrestling with a prankster relief pitcher Bob Shirley, and hurt his back in 1987. What if…?
FINALLY, two people agree with me about Donnie Baseball! Please tell
me why this great 1st baseman isn’t in the hall of fame? I remember watching him play in person and i was sitting in the
stands with my son and boyfriend
and Donnie came up to the plate
to hit his turn. Well, i screamed
out(and may i add i have a big mouth when i need to be heard) so
using my mouth i screamed “hit a homer for me Donnie!! And as true
as the sun rising each day, he hit
a baseball out of the best stadium
in the world!! and a man in the row
in front of us who was smoking a
cigar turned around at looked at me
in disbelief! and i smiled.
