Happy New Year- 2009

December 31, 2008
By DailySkew

How time flies and things change…

The Yankees have not won a World Series in 8 years. In 2009, 10 years ago will be 1999. Even more disturbing, 20 years ago will be 1989. The 1986 Mets will be 23 years away. No one is active in the major leagues from 1986 (when everything was said and done Greg Maddux was the last player from 1986 to last until 2008). Hulkamania was born in the WWF 25 years ago.

To a young fan of sports or entertainment all of the things I mentioned are ANCIENT HISTORY, even Joe Torre’s 1996-2000 dynasty. Kids today think it was always WWE. Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry’s careers and life lessons have been relegated to being archived to old newspapers and magazines. Mike Tyson’s boxing prime is limited to DVDs and Youtube. Celebrities like Mr. T and Pee Wee Herman are now jokes. The cartoons and TV shows of yesteryear are still rerunning or on DVDs, with little kids watching them like they were new.

Y2K has come and gone. There was no Apocalypse in 2000 or 2001. It is now 2009. It’s like this timeline is running on borrowed time.

Taking a look at photos from athletes and actors from the 1980’s and now is scary.

It really puts things in perspective. The march of Father Time beats on.

Anyway, Happy New Year from everyone who posts and comments on the DailySkew family.

Now, wait a minute: little kids watching cartoons from the past and thinking they are new is a bad thing?

We watched Looney Tunes growing up and found out later how old those cartoons were. At least we had the opportunity to appreciate the past.

Thank God for museums. We can relive the past when the present no longer feels real.

No, it is not a bad-thing, although it is confusing because I listed bad things ahead of it. I had a feeling Type Sixes would take issue with that. I was simply listing things. For example, I thought Looney Tunes was new. Everything is what it is. A cycle.

Thanks for missing the point as usual, by the way.

You gave me a flashback to August!

    Far out.

Wow. I’m enjoying living in this future reality, myself. I feel like I’m in one of those movies, like A.I. Or Minority Report.

I guess the fact that big sports events from my childhood happened over two decades ago doesn’t bother me as much as it did a couple of years ago. What can we do? We’re mortal. Like you suggested, the beat goes on.

Through the years, I’ve been cognizant of generational shifts. Take music, for example. Thanks to Mr. B and his dad, along with GAV and others, I learned to appreciate music from the 1960’s through the 90’s. Some music, like Pink Floyd, spans generations. It’s been fascinating to observe how these older rock bands have stayed relevent over the years, even as their once youthful audience ages and the number of new fans diminish.

As Billy Joel sang, “We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning, since the world’s been turning.”

Anyway, I see where you’re coming from. I just hope everything’s okay.

Nothing to add except good riddance to 2008 and have a happy 2009!

I saw Dick Clark on TV last night for three seconds. Father Time is a cruel s.o.b.

    Your’re right. I’m done.

Time to stare into the infinity well….

I’m trying to say something along the lines of Neil Gaiman’s Matrix short story, where the 1990’s were a glitch.blip.skip or whatever.

For someone like Mimic and his friends, who can’t remember yesterday, my post means nothing and is taken out of context.

For someone like me who remembers every Mike Tyson’s 1 round KO’s and now seeing him being fat, in and out of prison, and having tribal tattoos on his face is a sign of Father Time’s drum beat.

I’m not talking about Billy Joel or Madonna reinventing themselves for each decade.

    I saw Dick Clark, too………….

If you take a look at the previous years he heralded in and compare it to last night…as Number Seis said, you can take your theories and acceptance or generational shifts you learned from such stars as Mr. B and GAV and drop them down the Well.

Thanks for the newsflash about being mortal.

Nowhere did I say I did not enjoy living in this future reality.
