Mel Stottlemyre laid off from Mariners

Recently Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu wanted to go with a new pitching coach, and called Mel Stottlemyre this weekend to break the news.

Mel, a New York icon and gentleman, said:

“We had a nice conversation, very cordial. He said he wanted to be the one to give me the news. That was first class. A lot of guys would have taken the easy way out. I had a desire to come back, but at the same time, I let them know that a new manager should be able to bring in his own coaching staff.”

Mel, 67, lives near Seattle and due to family and health priorities probably won’t be going to another team.

To illustrate how the times they are a changin’: former pitching coaches (Mets, Yankees) Mel Stottlemyre, Leo Mazzone (Braves), and Rick Petterson (A’s, Mets) are all out of the game.

I figured that after Commissioner Bud Selig expressed concern that pitching coaches were getting too much money as free agents (most notably Mazzone when he went with the Orioles and Petterson with the Mets) that teams no longer valued pitching coaches. But then I read this from Leo Mazzone, who was considered the best by many baseball observers:

“I’ve let it be known to general managers in the big leagues that money is not an issue. I don’t want them thinking it is. I’m ready to bounce whenever somebody calls. I’ll have my bags packed in 10 minutes.”

So what’s the problem?

Mel has always sucked as a pitching coach. General managers have finally realized that pitching coaches are are overrated and overpaid commodity.

I never really got why so many wanna-be GM’s online bash Mel for being a poor pitching coach.

    Evidence?

    CAUSE I LOVE MATSUI!!
How the game has humiliated some
of the best people who ever threw a
ball or hit a baseball or who sat
behind the plate for inning after
    inning ans they “NEVER complained”
    like they do know!
HELLO: Manny and to many other cry
    babies to name here!!!!!
Mickey Mantle, crippled so badly that every time he put on his pin
strips he was so heavily bandaged
he could barely walk, we never ever

Yep, I think the order came down from Selig to pay coaches min. wage salaries and make them replaceable.
