Jorge Posada attacks Pudge Rodriguez and Joba

Michael Kay interviewed Jorge Posada, and managed to get some controversial quotes from the frustrated Yankees catcher, who has been on the DL. The interview will be shown on YES Network on Sept. 28.

His thoughts on Joba Chamberlain:

“Leave him in the bullpen. If you start him and he pitches 200 innings, he won’t be able to (last). You’re going to lose him. He’s going to get hurt . . . I don’t see him as a starter. I’d leave him in the bullpen. I said in the spring, seeing him as a reliever, I think his body is made to be a reliever. This year tells you a sign, a little sign. A little tendinitis tells you a lot . . . I don’t see it.”

On catcher Ivan Rodriguez coming back next year:

“Pudge, he’s my friend, but he’s going to have to go somewhere else.”

On watching the games on TV:

“I haven’t been watching the whole games. I really can’t take it. What I’ve seen is we don’t have enough pitching. It’s pitching. Right now, we need a five-man rotation. You cannot have question marks. They have to be erased”

My thoughts:

1) Initially my reaction was: Jorge is sounding a lot like Curt Schilling, i.e. a player who wants to be Assistant General Manager.
2) Joba performed admirably as a starter this year before he got hurt in Texas. The Yankees are a better team with Joba starting 30 games, pitching 200 innings, and starting in the post-season than if he waited in the bullpen to pitch like he did at the beginning of this year.
3) Jorge’s comments are against what Joba and the Yankees organization want; they need and want Joba to be the ace. The Yankees fans and MEDIA are very opinionated about Joba’s role, yet they are very wishy-washy. It’s very easy to pile on and say that Joba belongs in the pen while he’s injured.
4) Jorge threw I-Rod under the bus because he doesn’t want anyone competing with his catching time next year. Granted, Pudge may very well not be asked to come back, but there’s no reason for Jorge to say it.
5) Ultimately, I commend Jorge for expressing his honest opinions. He’s a true leader, and is not politically correct. I can understand his frustration…BUT I just don’t see how productive these comments are.
6) So after I had time to digest his quotes, I don’t think he meant any ill-will, and he just wants the team to win. He’s upset that he’s missing so many games, and how poorly the team has performed. He’s a man’s man, who doesn’t mince words. That being said, he’s wrong about Joba. I just hope Joba’s confidence doesn’t get shattered to know that his own catcher doesn’t think he’s durable enough to be a starter. I hope Joba proves the old man wrong!

next season when Jorge gets his job
back again i will be very pleased.
obviously his not catching this year really put a hurtin’ on the yankees!! my question is: do we have a back up catcher for next season? can’t pudge help out in that position?
As for Joba. my opinion is that Torre should have played him more
than he did! joba was pumped. i am
not saying play him as a starter,
joe should have just played him a little more!when the fans saw Joba
on the mound this year they all went nuts! they were expecting a
year with at least 16 wins from Joba and an ace! oops! NOT!
now if Joba stays in the bull pen
how will this affect his pitching?
so that is why i wanted to know if
we have a back up catcher for some
    pitchers like Joba.

Joe Torre wasn’t allowed to use Joba more due to the Joba Rules that were designed to save Joba’s arm. Joba had started the season in the minor leagues last year as a starter. The only reason he was a relief pitcher last year was because Cashman didn’t want to overwork Joba.

Cashman did not want to abuse Joba, and the organization as a whole wanted to limited his innings pitched (under 200 innings) last year and this year to prevent him from ruining his arm.

    He ruined it anyway.

Joba in the bullpen would be a wasted talent. We already have good guys in the bullpen. Joba is either an ace STARTER or an ace CLOSER. And since we have Mo, Joba needs to start.

Jose Molina would be the starting catcher next year if the Yanks don’t re-sign Pudge. Jorge will NOT be back when the season starts, and when he does return he will never be the same.

Jorge should go to first and Pudge should go to behind the plate. You cant ask him to come in the middle of the season when the yankees suck and learn a new pitching staff and then ask him to leave. It’s not Pudge’s fault jorge got hurt but you cant take pudge for granted hes not some kind of melted cheese! Keep pudge!!!! Jorge will just have to go to first.Next jorge posada should be more careful
