2009 Free Agent Class: Who will be a Yankee?

A Drawing of a Baseball Expert

With the so-called experts saying that the Yankees should not sign any of their own impending free agents (Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu, Pudge Rodriguez, Sidney Ponson, and Carl Pavano) they are also saying that with Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui having one year left, they should be traded.

Ken Griffey Jr is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

I was just trying to look up different baseball cards because all I ever see anymore is Topps. But that's also all I can find on here. Did they stop making all the other brands? I have bought a ton of 2011 Topps cards, just because of my general love of baseball. But I too have the same issue as you. I am a Ranger and an Indian fan. I also collect Pudge Rodriguez's cards and out of all that I've bought, even though he has lost popularity I still haven't gotten his Nationals card yet. I have maybe a total of 10 cards from both teams combined. I have a ton of double Mets cards, I don't have all of them in front of me at the moment, but if you have any Rangers cards or Indians I'd be happy to trade with you. I myself like the Kimball Champions…I have ten of them I believe, I'm pretty sure I have either Johan or David Wright. I'm going to check through them all tonight. Send me an email if you're interested in any of this. I don't use my email too much so can you type the subject Baseball cards in all Caps?

No, Bret was gone the year before I worked there. I did have a long conversation with Ervin Santana and Jose Molina in right field before a game about different girls in the stands. We'll just say that neither one is picky.

I also got to tell Pudge Rodriguez about Zidane's headbutt in the World Cup Final. He was a very active listener, which I appreciated.

    Anonymous,

Cashman’s plan was never to re-sign those guys. All are overpaid in the current market, and they would be forced to take 1-year contracts and reduced pay in 2009.

Only Bobby Abreu could command a 2-3 year deal on the market, but it would be a lot less than the $17 mil/year he gets now.

Frankly Pavano should work for minimum wage for the Yanks next year, but he will find some sucker that offers more money. The Yanks paid for his Tommy John surgery and gave him a full salary.

Your plan to keep everyone and hope everyone is healthy was Cashman’s plan going into this season, and it failed.

    Vahl,

I would have signed Adam Dunn in a heartbeat, but like you said the MEDIA will bury him for striking out so much.

I have super psychological issues with Mark Teixeira as well. Boras wants 10 years. What if Godzilla played 1B next year for the Yanks?

I personally respect Pat Burrell’s bat. He could play LF or DH.

K-Rod would never be a setup man.

Milton Bradley would be eaten alive. So would Manny.

I may be tempted to offer Vlad a deal if the Angels can’t afford him. He’s a year younger than Abreu and is on track for the Hall of Fame. He can play RF and DH. Would be cool if he was open to the idea of playing 1B.

I would sign ZERO relief pitchers, and continue to grow guys from AAA.

    Starter- C.C or bust.

i did not agree with that 2009 free agent class: who will be a
yankee? some names were yanks who
    we got rid of!!
keep everyone mentioned as a free
yank next year, the same team we had this year! wang will be back, and should do better with us.
pavano should stay $ earn his $$.
hideki should be a d.h. if he has
the operation and it doesn’t help him as much as it should. i just
am a die hard yankee fan and i am
sorry we are leaving the stadium!

Other than Texiera (and even that is a psychological stretch for me) … there were a couple of other names of players under age 30 … big Adam Dunn fan, but I know the all-walk, low-batting average thing doesn’t play well with the fans or MEDIA in New York …

    K-Rod? C.C.?

Pitchers scare me due to the nature of their jobs … injuries are so commonplace.

I was watching today’s game between the Yanks and Devil Rays (they were up 7-4 in the 6th or 7th) … Pettitte and Jeter were having a nice conversation, and Posada and Jeter were in good spirits.

I hope Pettitte, Moose, Giambi, and Abreu all return. I didn’t see any names on that list (maybe Texiera) that were huge upgrades.

I can't wait for next year (I have CC and Sheets thoughts in my future!)…But in all seriousness my wife and I are going next Sunday and sadly its likely the last game ever at Yankee Stadium. Kinda funny how this year has gone and if things end the way they appear we may finish 4th! Yuck! It will be great though to kick the snot out of Baltimore for the final game! We got tickets in the upper tier for less than $200 which wasnt too bad (if anyone else is interested?) http://www.esellout.com/ResultsGeneralAtVenue.aspx?kwds=New+York+Yankees&venid=68
At least Hughes got the call up after the AAA playoffs, it would be a nice way to salvage his season with a couple good appearances heading into the offseason either as a part of Yankees future lure OR in a potential trade! LET'S GO YANKEES!
