Yankees vs Red Sox

There is a lot of hype for this 3-game series, because

#1 The Yankees can control their own destiny by winning this series.
#2 It’s the last regular season series that Boston will play in the Bronx.
#3 The Red Sox can finish off and crush the hopes and dreams of New Yorkers.

My thoughts:

IF, and only IF, the Yankees could pull off the sweep, we can talk about being in the Wild Card hunt for real. This would be “the run” the Yankees have been TALKING about all year.

However, more than likely, all the talk and sense of urgency will not result in a sweep or even a series win. If this year is any indication of how unclutch this 2008 team is, the Yanks will surely disappoint their fans once again.

We’ll have to wait and see.

the only form of this I know is "rocks my sox off" which means "that's awesome". Otherwise it might (maybe?) refer to something associated with war. In war soldiers would wear their shoes and socks for such long periods of time their socks would literally rot off their feet, often causing gangrene. Sorry, I don't know.

The Yankees ended a six-game slide with a solid outing from Ivan Nova, two homers from Alex Rodriguez and two hits from Jorge Posada in his return to the lineup.

I kind of disagree with this on the premise that many years the Braves were the best “regular season” team but were eliminated in the NLDS. In a short 5 game series you can ride two dominant pitchers (i.e. the 2001 D'backs with Schilling/Johnson) and get two starts out of each to win the series. In a 7 game series you only need one decent outing from a #3 to win the series. I would argue that the STL Cardinals team that won 84 regular season games a few years ago and then caught fire in the playoffs were not the best team in baseball.

The Yankees have not been mathematically eliminated, but too many things have to break in their direction for them to make it. Baseball Prospectus’s Playoff Odds Report gives the Yankees a 2.4 percent chance of making the playoffs, which breaks down to a 0.2 percent chance of upending the Rays and a 2.2 percent chance of winning the wild card. Given that they’ve shown no ability to establish any kind of forward momentum, believing that they will somehow realize this small chance is an act of blind faith. It’s time to move on.
