I’ll bet a lot of Yankee fans have a new appreciation of Joe Torre this year.

  2. Anonymous on August 28, 2008 at 5:09 am

The Stadium deserved a grand finale, but it’s just not meant to be for this team.

  3. RedSoxFan on August 28, 2008 at 5:11 am

    About time!!!

  4. Anonymous on August 28, 2008 at 5:12 am

another well deserved yankee beating. very enjoyable. a waste of almost a quarter of a billion dollars.

  5. RedSoxFan on August 28, 2008 at 5:12 am

I swear I saw a very, very large lady singing in the upper deck. Do you suppose even Yogi is saying it’s over?

  6. MetsFan on August 28, 2008 at 5:13 am

Captain Intangibles kept his remarkable streak of cheap hits intact. Doe this guy ever hit a ball with authority?

  7. V on August 28, 2008 at 8:20 am

The year 2008 feels like the 1980’s all over again for the Yanks — the Mets are winning with pitching (Mike Pelfrey? Johann, etc.), and the Yanks don’t have enough in the tank.

Following that logic … 2009 should be a GREAT year for the Yanks!

DIGRESSION: I don’t, in general, dislike the Holiday Inn MBA class ads. The one about Bill Polski is great. But the one with Ripken sucks. It’s just an excuse to throw Ripken on the screen, with no thought how it would all tie together. “If we stay in a Holiday Inn, can we have nicknames?” What the hell is that even supposed to mean? Give yourself a ###### nickname if you want, what do I care? What does it have to do with anything? They wanted to have Ripken in an ad; they wanted to have people giving themselves “funny” nicknames. But they had no idea how to use these elements in any coherent or logical fashion. Very frustrating to me, as someone who has nothing better to do than think about these things.

It has been a tough year watching this team. Lifeless, uninspired, mailing it in, call it whatever you like. If you don’t have the pitching, you ain’t gonna win. As soon as they get behind, it seems that the life just goes out of the team. What surprises me is the offense. Or lack of it. A-Rod apparently has his mind elsewhere. He has some personal problems, most of which have been self inflicted, but he has a bullseye on his back and has to produce. With the exception of 2007, he has not done that with the Yanks. Maybe if he showed some emotion, a la Paul O’Neill, instead of blowing bubbles with his gum after yet another strikeout or rally killing double play ground ball, it wouldn’t be so hard to watch him. Whatever, he is a lightning rod and fair or not, he is the focus of what is wrong with this Yankee team this year. He is not a leader in any sense of the word. I have felt that some of the guys reached their expiration date a year or two ago, but could not be moved because of their contracts. That excuse will not be available this off season, and I fully expect that there will be major changes. A question for you Mr Feinsand: Why does Girardi stay with a lineup that is obviously not working? I keep hearing that A-Rod should be moved to 7th or 8th to take some of the pressure off him. Where have I seen that before?? Giambi has been worse than worthless, he is a very streaky hitter who would do well hitting the ball to the opposite field, something he refuses to do, except by accident. He clogs the roster, has for years, I hope he is let go so that they can bring in someone that may be more productive. Wasn’t it Branch Rickey who told Ralph Kiner (when he was traded), “we finished last with you, we can finish last without you”? Yanks need a good mix of young, experienced and HUNGRY players. They have long lost the edge and attitude that was their trademark.. I would like to see Cashman sign another contract to continue his long range plans

  10. Old Sal on August 28, 2008 at 7:44 pm

First time I’ve had to say this in 14 years…but it’s time to throw in the towel. Giambi must go. Abreu should go, though a 1 year contract would be acceptable. I’d say get rid of Cano, but i believe in selling high, not at all time lows.

Though I don’t lay much blame on Girardi for this season, shame on him for batting A-Rod and Giambi back to back. I don’t care if it’s a Rightly/Lefty thing. They combine to hit .200 w/ RISP. How many games have the Yankees lost this year b/c those guys didn’t get a runner in.

  11. WTF? on August 28, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Brian Cashman is the worst General Manager in the league. He passes on the best talent available to spend big money on mediocre players who never seem to hack it in New York. His farm system and so called talented young players all turned out to be big busts execpt for Joba Chamberlain who hasn’t proved he can make it through an entire season as a starter. Still has not made a trade or signed an ace to anchor this staff. Brian Cashman is a bean counter who inherited an excellent team and turned it into a clubhouse full of over-rated and overpaid mediocre played how apparently have no heart or desire to win. Cashman should be the first to go.

  12. Yemite on August 28, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Let’s see the Rays make it to the playoffs for 13 straight years or better yet, let ’s see them win one playoff series. The Rays are this year’s Indians. They’re not going to sneak up on anybody next year. In fact, I’d bet my salary against anybody’s that they won’t even be in the playoffs. Enjoy this moment while it lasts because it’s going to be gone in a blink. Once a loser, always a loser. Having the number one for 10 years in row will eventually get you somewhere.

  13. Fat Freddie on August 28, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Giambi, Damon, Matsui and I hate to say it Moose must all go, that is after Cashman is dumped on the street after todays rudder game with the Redsox. We need to acquire some quality free agent pitching, Sabathia and his counterpart in In Milwaukee, Texiera, and most importantly Mike Cameron. There will be an argument about letting Abreu go but there is no one out there available that is better. Heshould have been batting second all year. Jeter shold have been batting lead-off. A-Rod is getting killed right now for all the double plays over the last few weeks but no one wants to mention Jeter is among the league leaders in HIDP. He has to be close to 30 for the year. I think the two kids we kept instead of trading for Santana is going to burn us for a long time. Kennedy and Hughes are average Pitchers at best. I don’t know whosold those groceries but as fans we will all die of food poisoning because of that sell job. You think the heat is bad now? Wait until you start shelling out 800 bucks a ticket next year for a potential 4th place team. Cashman needs to be caned in center filed on the final home game. My Grandfather is spinning in his grave. Oh, one last thing, George needs to kick his kids in the ass for letting it come to this.

Once the Yankees are mathematically eliminated, ARod will go on a tear.

    He needs to rrreeelaaaaxxx.

  15. PWWilson on August 28, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Living out here in the left coast for the last 20 years I keep up with the Yankees daily. I am in my 60’s now…., What I see is that there are too many outside distractions going on and not enough focus on baseball. I honestly believe that the major influence of it all is Mr. Cancer himself A-Rod. I think he is a bad influence on the youngsters. Cano can become a star but I feel the negativity of A-Rod rubs off on him. There does not seem to be a team mentality like they had during the 90’s. Even back in the 70’s with all the zaniness going on with Billy martin and Reggie you can tell there was chemistry there and team togetherness on the field. I don’t see that these days. The Twins are a model team great scouts great manager Players that like each other and play together. No off the field distractions. Even those that left want to come back. The Angels are the same. This is something the Yankees were back in the 90’s notice how they won because of it. We are back to the days where no one wants to play for the yankees again.

  16. paul s. on August 28, 2008 at 7:48 pm

What the Yankees don’t have is players with character. There is no Brosius, no Oneill, no Boggs, no Randolph, no Roy White, no Girardi(player) no Homer Bush, no Bernie, no Miguel Cairo, get the picture? What this team doesn’t realize is just because you are a character doesn’t mean that you have character. There are no role players, just prima donna’s. Jeter is my favorite Yankee but his silence is negligent. HE IS THE CAPTAIN! Being a 26 year (still active) Navy man I can tell you from first hand experience you cannot lead from the rear. It’s easy to lead when everything is going good. The true measure of a leader is how he manages when chaos is all around. We need more character on this team and fewer sound bytes.

  17. Anonymous on August 28, 2008 at 7:48 pm

When I listen to Girardi or the other marketing spin I feel like I’m at briefing at the Bush White House and they’re telling me the surge is working even as American casualties rise! Even if Girardi is just naturally the most optimistic person in the world, given the results it would seem pigheaded at best, insane at worst to never once consider changing tact to see if it might help spark something in an obviously lethargic squad.

  18. abc123 on August 28, 2008 at 7:49 pm

As Yankee Fans,we have been spoiled. It just seems like an extra part of the season, the play-offs.I think that the biggest reason that the Yanks will probably be home this year in Oct. is that they just never hit when runners were on base.A-rod only hits or homers when it means nothing.I also agree with an earlier poster that this team has no heart or character. There really isn’t any player that jumps out at you like the players of the past .Well i’m sure that they will load up and give the new stadium a reason to be jumping next year and life will be good again.See you in 2009!

  19. Mr Feinstein on August 28, 2008 at 7:50 pm

    I don’t know!

  20. sancho on August 29, 2008 at 4:45 am

Lets call it a season and get ready for next year. We’ve been so good for so many years it’s probably about time that we got our butts waxed. All should share in the blame equally this years New York Yankee team has played really pathetic baseball. The swagger is no longer there. Its a shame that we had to close this grand cathedral of baseball with this team. Let’s keep Nady and may the rebuilding begin. Yankee fan for life.

  21. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 4:46 am

You suck Brian Cashman. Go back to cleaning the toilets at the Stadium. Buck Showalater will be new Yankees gm.

  22. bill w on August 29, 2008 at 4:49 am

This team has been slowly going downhill for years now. Hopefully it will take only this one down year for management to wake up to what really needs to be done. Starting pitching is a main priority and crashman has failed miserably in this dept. Starting pitching is how tampa has survived all their injuries this year. We have to get younger with our some of our positional players too! Worried that giradi is wired too tightly for this kind of pressure. 2009 can’t get here fast enough!

  23. FMZ on August 29, 2008 at 4:54 am

A general house cleaning is needed starting with Cashman and including the AAA coaching staff Girardi put together.

  24. DamianHospital on August 29, 2008 at 5:07 am

Something I think everyone is losing sight of:

I believe Cashman and the Powers-That-Be were *OK* with having a sub par season because 2008 was the final year for a lot of contracts, and the final year at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees Front Office knows that next year they will be making money hands over fist, the PAIN will be forgotten, and they can snatch the top free agents on the market.

The Yankees Hierarchy were “OK” with Cashman taking a gamble on cheap prospects like Joba, Hughes, and Kennedy instead of giving Johan Santana a 10 year deal.

The Yanks went with what they had, got a new manager and a “professional” coaching staff.

Things didn’t work out due to injuries and the lack of hitting when it counted.

But the Yanks still broke their attendance record, and still make a profit, $275 million payroll be damned.

The fans got screwed. For those of you who go to the games, listen to the radio, watch on cable, use MLB.TV, and make financial and emotional commitments to the team, it hurts and is frustrating.

But understand, this was a “transition year”, and the Yanks had been saddled with bloated and long contracts for the last few years (due to the Front Office and poor drafting). Cashman can’t just magically snap his fingers and get Carl Crawford and BJ Upton instead of Johnny Damon and [insert LF].

Getting CC and Teixiera for 10 years each will cause the SAME problems and situation 7 years from now.

But come on now, losing Wang and Jorge for most of the season is crippling. And when Joba, our last hope, walked off the mound in Texas- that was IT.

  25. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 5:26 am

By the way, what does it matter “who’s fault it is”?

Fire Cashman? The coaches? Don’t re- sign Giambi, Pettitte, Pavano, Moose, Pudge, Marte, Abreu?

    So what?

No one gets into trouble anymore in this new regime.

Back in my day, The Boss would have fired everyone already.

And in some sick way, I miss it.

I tire of Girardi and Cashman spinning everything after every loss.

    Show some FIRE.

  26. eddie on August 29, 2008 at 5:27 am

Cashman is the problem. He has had control of free agent signings, drafting broken down pitchers, not drafting quality position players, overpaying for international slop. Cashman is the problem. Fixing the problem means getting rid of Cashman to start with.

  27. seisX on August 29, 2008 at 5:27 am

WAKE UP PEOPLE the problem is NOT cashman it’s the Steinbrenniers and it ALWAYS has been. The Yankees put together a dynasty when George was suspended and when he came back to impose his will it started going down hill. His sons are even WORSE. you can be a passionate owner but learn to keep quiet and let the people you hire do their jobs.WHO wanted Giambi, Johnson, Sheffield, A-Rod and Mussina ? Heir George and his little baby brats. I grew up LOVING the Yankees but HATING GEORGE. We are in for a repeat of the 80’s.

  28. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 5:28 am

Steinbrenner wanted Giambi and Sheff and those were bad calls yes. But when Cashman traded Sheff he got nothing but some broken down mediocre pitching prospects in return for him. It was Cashman NOT the Steinbrenners who wanted Johnson and Mussina. Cashman wanted Johnson since ‘98 and didn’t stop coveting him till he got him when he was old and brittle. And he passed up on a young and in his prime Carlos Beltran for him. And Mussina was re-signed by Cashman. By the way, he passed up on Manny to get Mussina back in ‘01. As for A-Rod, that’s still a good move. The problem is that it shouldn’t have been the only move. A-Rod needs to be paired up with an equal bat like a Mark Teixeira. Think of the great historic lineups and you’ll find Ruth and Gehrig or Mantle and Maris. A-Rod is paired up with nobody equal. Cashman sucks. He’s a toilet cleaner.

  29. Jeff on August 29, 2008 at 5:29 am

I’m from the 80’s too, so I saw exactly what you saw, and recall how after the Boss was suspended Stick and Buck rebuilt the team. But when the Boss came back he let Stick and Buck continue doing their job. He only made the change when they got eliminated after the ‘95 playoffs. A stupid move that actually provided excellent results when the team went on to win it all in ‘96. So please stop acting like the Boss has done everything wrong because that’s not the case and history proves it. Cashman on the other hand took over when Stick and Watson had already revamped and turned the roster into a winner. And all he’s done is add the wrong pieces. And it was Cashman too who wanted Johnson, not just the Boss. Please stop apologizing for Cashman. It’s like looking in the mirror and saying you look good when in fact you look like sh!t. Cashman’s tenure as gm has been sh!t.

  30. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 5:29 am

I know assman is to blame but George has to shoulder the burden as well and so does the “braintrust” in florida for ousting Stick. what i’m saying is don’t put it all on cashman, make the steinbrenners ADMIT to their stupidity so we don’t have baby hank acting like his dad n the 80’s.

  31. KenRyu on August 29, 2008 at 5:30 am

Stick has not been ousted. He still works for the team. He just doesn’t appear to want to get fully involved at his age. He’s getting up in years, but he’s still part of the organization. That’s why I advocate naming Buck Showalter as new gm. Buck is an excellent talent evaluator and precisely what the team needs. Which is what we haven’t had since the Stick/Buck rebuilding years. As for Hank and Hal admitting anything? They have nothing to admit. They’re the owners. They hire a gm to make the baseball decisions. They can go with his recomendations or not. Cashman sold them on Hughes, Kennedy and Melky being the future. He sold them on those kids being ready and to not give them and money away for Santana. That was Cashman’s call. They let him make the decision and it shows he knows nothing. It bothers me when fans blame the owners out of pure spite. Hank and Hal have given Cashman all the resources he has asked for and then some, and yet he makes stupid decision after stupid

  32. Jeff on August 29, 2008 at 5:31 am

I lived through Andy Hawkin’s ho-hitter loss. When Chuck Cary and Dave LaPoint were our big starters. I remember when our closer was Lee Guetterman. When it was an event to see Alvaro Espinoza hit his one homerun a year. I put up with all that, I’m a Yankee fan and the Yankees will rise again, but it starts with Cashman being replaced by Buck Showalter. Hank and Hal are not the problem. If anything they’re part of the solution. Hank talks a lot, but he has not hurt the Yankees yet. Hal is a smart money man and will spend the organization’s resources wisely unlike Cashman.

  33. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 5:32 am

Young Guns, Young Guns, Young Guns! The 2008 highlight reel title: “We Got to Keep Melky!” or “Kennedy/Hughes ‘08!”

  34. RedSoxNATION on August 29, 2008 at 5:33 am

Jaret Wright Carl Pavano Kei Igawa Kevin Brown Randy Johnson Jeff Weaver….LMAO!

  35. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 5:34 am

Clueless Cashass still doesn’t get it. He “bravely” takes the blame for the mess that he has created, but he still doesn’t understand why the Yanks are underachieving. They are not underachieving, they are just a mediocre team because of all the lousy moves that this 41 year old intern turned baseball wanna-be has made. It will take some time for the next guy to put this franchise back on top. Let’s hope that the owners make Cashass’s contract the first one that they dump to start the rebuilding and go get the right guy for the job.

  36. Anonymous on August 29, 2008 at 6:51 am

To those morons who make the yankees sound as though they are
still playing in the little leagues, DROP DEAD!
