Game 111: Xavier Nady, I-Rod upset Angels

What a game.

Although the Yankees had more dramatic 9th inning walk-off victories this year, today’s game may have been the best come-from-behind victory of the season, because it was against the best team in baseball, the LA Angels.

John Lackey seemed to have been having his way in the Bronx, especially when Darrell Rasner was eaten alive by the Angels. Darrell lasted 4 innings, and at 5-0 Angels, only the most loyal fans actually believed the Yankees had a chance. I was one of them.

The understated Dan Giese hurled 3 scoreless innings and stopped the bleeding, which gave the Yanks a chance to comeback.

The Yankees capitalized on 4 errors by the Angels, who are known for their great defense and doing “the little things to win”.

Xavier Nady homered and had 6 RBI. Pudge Roderiguez started the rally with a HR. Pinch runner Justin Christian had a great scoring play, and an RBI of his own.

Even after the Yankees had clawed their way to tie it, and take the lead, usually excellent Edwar Ramirez (3-0, 3.20) have up a grand slam to Mark Teixeira with 2 outs. But the Yanks struck back for 6 runs in the next inning, showing the baseball world that they deserve to be in the post-season. Jose Veras had a scoreless 9th. Final score 14-9.

Robinson Cano had a great pinch hit. Most of the Yankees hitters did well today, especiall Bobby Abreu. It was truly a great day for Yankees fans.

Here’s what the Yanks did to the best pitching staff and defensive team in baseball:

LA Angels IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
Lackey 6.0 7 4 4 4 4 1 3.10
Arredondo (BS, 1) 1.0 3 4 0 0 0 1 1.13
Shields (BS, 2)(L, 4-3) 0.1 1 5 0 2 0 0 2.98
Oliver 0.2 3 1 1 0 1 0 3.28

I was crushed after the Texiera slam, and thrilled when the Yanks pulled off the second comeback of the day!

In years past, the Yanks would have lost. The Angels have been such a frustrating team.

I’m glad the newcomers made a difference!
