Game 89: Brett Gardner beats Red Sox

It was another thrilling late-inning game at Yankees Stadium last night, as rookie Brett Gardner beat the 2nd best closer in baseball, the Red Sox Jonathan Papelbon (3-3, 2.39) with 2 outs and 2 strikes in the 10th inning. Brett battled Papelbon from 0-2 to 2-2, and kept fouled off so many pitches a la Chuck Knoblauch in his heyday. Brett got a single up the middle to score in Robinson Cano, who started the 10th inning off with a single. (Cano also had a 2RBI triple earlier). Melky sacrificed Cano over to 2B, with set up Gardner.

Mariano Rivera pitched two shutout innings in a tie game. He also struck out pinch hitter Manny Ramirez- with a runner on 3rd- on three pitches down the middle. I think Manny was promised a day off, and didn’t want to swing the bat, I really do.

Joba Chamberlain did great for the 1st 4 innings, but then kept throwing his slider on full counts, which resulted in a high pitch count and walks. So it caught up with him in the 5th, as the Yanks were trailing 3-1 (A-Rod had a solo shot). Joba wound up going 6th, Dave Robertson gave up a run in the 7th, and Kyle Farnsworth hurled a scoreless 8th in a tie game.

Injuries and Transactions
Johnny Damon was placed on the DL for the first time in his career. No word on when he’ll be ready. Same as Godzilla. Can anyone say “Barry Bonds”?

OF Justin Christian was recalled from AAA.

in a way i was happy for gardner. the team seems to like him very much! but i am a die hard damon fan
and i am proud to say that because
damon smiled and hugger brett after
the single to win the game!
i would have given away all of my
    precious possessions to have been
sitting in the stadium last night!!
i was glad the new york crowd proved
by cheering for a rod, that they just want to win and see a rod break records! his personal life
style is his own cross to bare.
