Game 102: Joba shutouts Beckett 1-0
It was a hyped pitching matchup that lived up to its billing as Joba Chamberlain (3-3, 2.30) went 7 dominant innings at Fenway Park over the arrogant Josh Beckett (9-7, 3.83). Joba had 9 K and 1 BB and 3 hits. Beckett gave up 1 run on 9 hits, 6K, and 1 BB.
Joba accidentally threw at Kevin Youklis’ head again.
Jason Giambi got a lucky hit down third to drive in the only run.
Big Papi David Ortiz’s return was a bust.
Boston fans were unable to change the course of the game with their chants.
Kyle Farnsworth sucked in the 8th, retiring one batter but give up two hits. So Mariano Rivera came on, got two men out, and pitched the 9 for his 26/26 Save.
The Yanks have won 7 IN A ROW.
Injuries and transactions
The HUGE news is that during the game, the Yankees received outfielder Xavier Nady (.330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs in 90 games) and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte 4-0, 3.47, .200 vs righties and .255 vs lefties) from the Pittsburgh Pirates. [PENDING PHYSICAL and PAPERWORK]
Going to the Pirates, all minor leaguer prospects:
Right-field prospect Jose Tabata
Pitchers Ross Ohlendorf, George Kontos, and Phil Coke.
Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano are taking steps to come back this year.
Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui’s status are still up in the air.

Damaso Marte was a great DMB guy, back in the day. I hope he proves to be a great real-life cheat character.
X-Man — I hope he gets the opportunity to lift the championship trophy in October! I have zero expectations about him — I’ve been let down by other “Great” outfielders who’ve been traded to the Yanks in the past.
