Tony Bernazard Speaks

Responding to conspiracy rumors that Tony Bernazard was in on the conspiracy to fire Willie Randolph and to seize GM power himself, he was coy…

“I’m not going to comment on rumors that are not true. I have a very good reputation in this game. If some people want to blame me (for Randolph’s firing), what can I do? It’s not true.”

“I like watching batting practice. After I watch BP I have a good idea of who’s going to do what. You might see something that you compare it to the game, or the next day, or the following day. Next week, next month, last year. It’s what I do. My knowledge and expertise is baseball.”

“You don’t jog to first base on my team [when I was a player]. You had to police yourselves on a team and that’s what we did.

I got in a lot of players’ faces. I’m not going to say who, but that’s just the way it was. I was a very good athlete but others were more talented. How do you get better? By working.”

“I want to be the best,” he said. “People that know me say I talk baseball 24 hours a day, and it’s because I always want to get better. This game is simple but it’s very complicated at the same time. Not everybody knows all parts of the game. I want to be an all-around person, in baseball and outside. Not all people are leaders.”

Billy Wagner, however, is typically not sold:

Tony noted that “I’ve been to Billy Wagner’s house” yet Wagner said Saturday that he doesn’t know much about Bernazard.

“He comes around and talks to everybody but I’m not even sure what his job description is,” said Wagner. “I don’t have a problem with him being in here, as long as he’s not disrupting the team. He’s part of the front office, I guess he has the right to be in here.”

Tony Bernazard, was never a Randolph fan and had pushed for Montreal Expos third base/infield coach Manny Acta for the job. Acta was instead hired as one of Randolph’s coaches.

Having previously served as the Players Association’s administrator and liaison with the Latino players before coming to the Mets, Bernazard is regarded by the Hispanic players as a sort of godfather and his constant presence in the Mets’ clubhouse before and after games was good reason for Randolph to be wary.

In Bernazard, who would become a close confidant of Jeff Wilpon, the Latino players knew they could take their complaints to a higher authority.

it is kind of frightening to think that mere human beings can pull strings and cut thru the red tape and make excuses for themselves and
the baseball players! bernazard wanted willie’s job awhile back!

    Bernazard: What a jerk!

How can he want to be well-rounded as a person and obsessed with baseball 24-7? Does he even hear what he’s saying?

Let me guess: since Inglese is not his native tongue, he finds it difficult to express what he really means.

    I repeat: what a jerk!
