Well…not yet. But you know you’re dead if the Daily News TICK TOCK headline is counting down. However, with the so-called Shea Faithful and New York MEDIA in a frenzy demanding Randolph’s head on a silver platter in Flushing Meadows, it’s unlikely Willie Randolph can survive this year, or even this weekend for that matter.
It’s kind of like watching thousands of ants devour a barely-living grasshopper in your backyard.
In typical Mets fashion, the players turned against Willie and each other. The MEDIA hates the team, but still put high expectations for them EVEN with the historic collapse last September. Willie has lost his temper and is making cold sarcastic comments to the MEDIA. Mets ownership refuses to give their support, while Mets GM Omar Minaya is Willie’s last thread of hope. Omar is undecided but can see the writing on the wall. Omar is praying for the Mets to get hot. In many ways Omar is the perfect hopeful GM for such a hopeless franchise.
Why all the Mets bashing from me? Real simple: they got cocky in recent years after Joe Torre’s Yankees were unable to close out a World Series since 2000. The Mets, from top to bottom of the organization, believed all the hype because they had “the best team on paper”, and pretty much were in Wild Card contention every year under Willie. The Mets organization and fans believed that David Wright and Jose Reyes were better than A-Rod and Jeter. That Billy Wagner was better than Mariano Rivera. That with Pedro Martinez, anything was possible. That Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez were the best 1-2 punch in baseball. That when El Duque gets off the DL, things will get better. That they had the best bullpen in the league. That Carlos Beltran was the best CF in baseball. That Carlos Delgado would hit 40-50 homeruns.
Guess who was Shea Stadium yesterday? Art Howe, the last manager of the Mets that was fired before Willie. That’s pretty ironic. Art is now a coach for the lowly Texas Rangers. He and Willie were seen chatting about the current situation. You know you’re dead as a Mets manager when you see Art Howe, and you share war stories with him. Heck, if I was Willie and I saw Art Howe, I’d run and leave town. Let the MEDIA and Mets Front Office run the team, since they are so smart.
The Mets clubhouse is a nightmare scene from Earth Grim:
After the game Omar called a press conference announcing the signing of washed up veteran Trot Nixon. Willie had no idea, and thought he was getting fired: “He’s got something? We won tonight.”
Willie knows he is a walking dead man- a ghost. He asked reporters before the game: “You see me? You want to feel me?”
One annoymous player who was too cowardly to give his name said: “It’s time for a change. Unfortunately, but it’s time.” Could that be you, Billy Wagner, who blew your 3rd straight save- something that is 100% unacceptable in NY? Heck, Johan was winning 4-0 after 7, and Wagner blew it.
One source who claims to be a member of the Mets Hierarchy has everything planned out already. He said that Randolph, pitching coach Rick Petterson, and first base coach Tom Nieto will be fired real soon, as soon as Omar gives the word to the Wilpons. Howard Johnson is the most popular coach, and will be sparred. Bench coach Jerry Manuel (schlock) will take Willie’s place as interim manager until Omar can figure out what to do with the team.
I’ve been listening to NY radio and checking out the message boards. You’d think Willie’s last name was Bin Laden. The Mets are 32-34, 7.5 games out of 1st, with 3 teams in front, and 6.5 games out of the Wild Card with 6 teams in front. It’s mediocore, yes, but not last place, something the Yanks were at last month. Coming off the greatest collapse in history last year, it’s a wonder that Willie lasted this long. Don’t worry, in 5 years, he’ll be regarded in a good light, like Bobby Valentine is. OR…he could fade into obscurity like Jeff Torborg or Art Howe. We’ll see.

If Billy Wagner has turned against Willie, is it possible his heart wasn’t into closing those three games he blew?
Just sayin’, dude. Just sayin’. The quickest way to get Willie fired is to keep losing.
If Omar and the management were men, instead of MEDIA whores, they would announce a fire sale and sell off Delgado, Beltran, Wagner for Single A prospects, and even offer to pay half of their bloated contracts. Send Johan back to Minnesota, who cares? Let Willie work on some rookies, whip them into shape.
Reyes and Wright would get the message, and have no choice but to shape up. They’d probably p their pants if management started dumping players — I’m sure they don’t want to get stuck in Arlington or some other place that isn’t NYC. What a couple of LaMEos.
