Game 71: Pettitte neuters Padres; Giambi 2HR
On the heels of losing ace Chien-Ming Wang until September, Andy Pettitte (7-5, 4.29) showed everyone who is the the man by embarrassing the San Diego Padres offense for 7 innings in New York. Andy had 9K and 1BB in front of a pumped Tuesday night crowd. Pettitte has shown these last 2 starts that he remembered how to pitch (one run over his past 15 frames),
Jose Veras, recently recalled lefty Bill Traber, and Mariano Rivera (3K) finished the easy victory.
The offense was powered by the consistently resurgent Jason Giambi, who slugged 2HR. A-Rod had one too. Randy Wolf (5-5, 4.16) was chased after 4. Posada (.326, eat it and weep) and Cano (up to .230) each had two hits. Yanks knocked 11 hits in total.
Final score 8-0.
Yanks have won 5 in a row, and are distancing themselves away from other teams in the Wild Card race (they are 3.5 out of Tampa Bay and 1 out from Oakland).
Transactions and Injuries
Billy Traber was recalled from AAA. Don’t expect much from him, he was just called because Wang was placed on the DL, and is looking at a September return.
