Game 58: Blue Jays outlast Yankees Joba Chamberlain, bullpen
The Yankees future ace Joba Chamberlain, who was on a 65-pitch count, hurled around 38 or so pitches in the 1st inning. He would up walking 4 men and gave up a hit over 2 1/3 innings. I noticed in the past that Joba doesn’t have 1-2-3 quick innings like Mariano Rivera generally does, so this little experiment by the Yankees brain trust will end up in more losses for the team unless the offense picks up.
Blue Jays manager Jay Gibbons was happy:
“To be honest, I really kind of thought they’d do it [Monday night] in Minnesota where there wouldn’t be so much pressure. But that’s okay. We’re perfectly happy to be guinea pigs for them. I know he’s got great stuff. But at the same time, I’m just as glad not to have to be seeing him in the eighth innings of this series.”
Anyway, the real story last night was how the bullpen blew up. After Dan Giese (now 0-1, 2.45) , a 31-year old minor leaguer, acted as the long man for 3 2/3 innings allowing 1 run, Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez, and LaTroy Hawkins made the game get out of hand; Ramirez threw 17 pitches, and only 3 of them were for strikes. Chris Britton mopped up the 9th with a scoreless frame (albeit 2 hits).
Final score 9-3. Johnny Damon got a triple, double, and single, but only scored 1 run, as A-Rod and Abreu went a combined 0-8. Roy Halladay is now 7-4, 2.94.
Transactions
Scott Patterson was sent back down to AAA, while Dan Giese was called up. Giese did fine as a long relief guy last night, although he got tagged with the loss.
