With the Detroit Tigers releasing outfielder Jacque Jones, and Jim Leyland announcing that Gary Sheffield will be playing LF, one has to wonder if blacklisted Barry Bonds would make an appearance this year with the Tigers to play DH and/or LF. Bonds and Jim Leyland are tight.
Hey, remember Jacque Jones, Torii Hunter, and Matt Lawton were the highly touted outfielders for the Minnesota Twins back in the day?
Matt Lawton’s career has been over for some time (especially after he admitted he used HGH), and Jones seemed to have lost ALL of his power after 2006…hmmmm…
Anyway, Barry Bonds to the Tigers is the only logical fit, IF Bonds comes back. Considering Detroit dug themselves in a big hole, they may get desperate enough…I hope. He’d need a month or so to get back into shape, after Bud Selig put the word out not for any team to hire him.

Sweeney made his Major League debut on August 4, 1995 as the starting first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Chicago Cubs. He was hitless in four at-bats in his debut. He collected his first ML hit the next day against Cubs starter Jim Bullinger. He hit his first home run on August 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers Hideo Nomo.
He remained with the Cards until 1997 when he was traded to the San Diego Padres (along with Danny Jackson and Rich Batchelor) for Fernando Valenzuela, Phil Plantier and Scott Livingstone. He went 2 for 3 as a pinch hitter for the Padres in the 1998 World Series against the New York Yankees.
After the season, he was traded by the Padres (along with Greg Vaughn) to the Cincinnati Reds for Josh Harris, Reggie Sanders and Damian Jackson.
Sweeney spent one season with the Reds organization, much of which was spent with the AAA Indianapolis Indians. The Reds traded him on January 14, 2000 to the Milwaukee Brewers (along with Gene Altman) for Alex Ochoa. He spent the next two seasons with the Brewers shuttling between the Majors and AAA while battling through an assortment of injuries and trips to the Disabled list.
In 2002 he was traded by the Brewers (with Lou Collier, Jeromy Burnitz, Jeff D'Amico and cash to the New York Mets for Glendon Rusch, Lenny Harris and Alex Ochoa. He failed to make the Mets roster and was released. The San Diego Padres signed him as a free agent a few days later. Had a poor season with the Padres, hitting just .169 in 48 games.
Sweeney spent 2003 and 2004 with the Colorado Rockies, 2005 with the San Diego Padres, 2006-2007 with the San Francisco Giants and 2007 and 2008 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He has played first baseman, outfielder, and designated hitter.
In 1,120 career games, he is a lifetime .260 hitter, with 42 home runs, 245 runs batted in, and 16 stolen bases.
According to the New York Daily News in a story that broke in January 2007, Barry Bonds blamed a positive amphetamine test result during the 2006 season on a substance he took from Sweeney's locker. Sweeney's agent denied the claim that Bonds had gotten such a substance from Sweeney.[1] Bonds would later clear Sweeney of any involvement in his positive amphetamine test [2].
On July 27, 2007, against the Florida Marlins, he moved into a tie for 2nd place (151 hits) on the all time pinch hits list with Manny Mota with a pinch hit single.
On July 29, 2007, he moved into sole possession of 2nd place behind Lenny Harris on the all time pinch hits list with a game-tying, pinch hit double to deep right field in the 9th inning that scored Dave Roberts.
On August 9, 2007, Sweeney was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for second baseman Travis Denker. The trade was the first between the Giants and the Dodgers since 1985. [3] He was a top pinch hitter for the Dodgers for the remainder of the 2007 season
really nice jacque jones is awesome
Seriously, Cedeno is reaching Matt Lawton levels of dumb
The union notified us that it was investigating potential collusion regarding Barry Bonds and asked for information, and we told them that there was absolutely no collusion with respect to Barry Bonds or any other free agent. We are aware of no facts which would support a collusion claim regarding Bonds or any other free agents.
I haven’t received any offers on Barry since he became a free agent.
Jacque Jones

Reverand Jeremiah Wright providing the eulogy (or Pastor William Rennick, pick your poison). Here’s an excerpt:
The Man Needs Justice! JJJusssticcce!
Here is a black man … an athlete … a player in a WHITE SPORT who was SUCCESSFUL only THREE YEARS AGO! He hit 43 HOME RUNS over the course of two seasons!
If you’re name is Pat Burrell, a WHITE PLAYER with the Philadelphia Phillies, this means you get a LONG-TERM CONTRACT worth MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!
Now, if you’re a BLACK MAN named Jacques Jones (with a French name, no less) … you get to sit on the BENCH for the lowly Chicago CUBS, because you’re WHITE MANAGER doesn’t think you can hit home runs anymore!
He has no proof of this, but it doesn’t matter, b/c the WHITE MANAGER WHO used to play, mind you … the WHITE MANAGER who couldn’t the ball to the WARNING TRACK in his playing days … that WHITE MANAGER knows when the black athlete is done! EVEN THOUGH that player just got through hitting 43 home runs, with a high batting average, and all the rest!
Now you tell ME what’s wrong with that picture? You tell me why Jacques Jones was released by the Tigers?
You tell me why the Toronto BLUE Jays released Frank Thomas, a future Hall of Famer, after a bad TWO WEEKS!
TWO WEEKS! How do they know that Frank Thomas is DONE after two weeks?!? Do ya think … do ya think it MIGHT have somethin’ to do with the COLOR of his SKIN?
Ya think?
Do ya think … that MAAYYYBEEE it’s because we’re living in racist society? That this is STILL, to quote ICE CUBE, Amerikkka with a triple K? Do you think we might be living in a society that supports the man and subjugates the black man to a kind of SLAVERY without chains or bars or whips? A PSYCHOLOGICAL SLAVERY?
Look at Barry Bonds. Here’s a man who can still hit home runs — he hit over twenty of ‘em last year. This man, Barry Bonds, had one of the highest, if not THE highest, on-base percentages in ALL OF BASEBALL! And, if WE are to believe what we read … if we were to believe books like MONEYBALL, that say a player like Barry Bonds has VALUE b/c he draws a lot of walks, and hits for power, and he hits for average, and he’s a patient hitter, and he wears out the opposing pitcher … WELL, if we were to believe MONEYBALL, then you would HAVE TO conCLUDE that Barry Bonds would be PLAYING SOMEWHERE THIS YEAR. AND YET, he’s not playing.
He’s not PLAYING!
Now, why do you think that is? Do ya think it might be because people are judging him by the color of his skin, and not the content of his character?
Ya think?
Look at Roger Clemens. Here is a man, who, like BARRY BONDS, played into mid-40′s, well beyond the normal playing age for a pitcher. And, LIKE BARRY BONDS, he had some muscles that he didn’t have when he was young man in his 20′s. And, LIKE BARRY BONDS, he’s has been blackballed b/c he has been accused of using steroids.
BUT … UNLIKE BARRY BONDS, the GOVERNMENT isn’t investigating him. UNLIKE BARRY BONDS, you didn’t have so-called UNBIASED Baseball writers, who happen to be white, writing books called Games of Shadows or whatever racist motif they chose to use for a title … and you didn’t have baseball writers TEARING DOWN Roger Clemens, TEARING DOWN his legend, TEARING DOWN his career stats, CAMPAIGNING against him, RILING UP the WHITE fans against him, making fun of HAT size, and his SHOE size, and God knows what other size the jealous made of.
No, no, no, my friends, I think … the EVIDENCE is clear. It’s BEYOND a reasonable doubt. It’s beyond this GAME OF SHADOWS, where we, the African-American people of this country have hid for TOO MANY YEARS!
The Tigers don’t have enough pitching. The only way they get into the postseason is by winning their division … it’s a weak division.
The Angels are better positioned for the wild card.
I’m rooting for that move. I would love to see Bonds help the Tigers into the playoffs.
Sheff and Bonds on the same team? NEVER.
