Game 53: Pettitte, Joba, Mo, Giambi beat Orioles

The Yankees salvaged the third game of the Baltimore series, with strong pitching from Andy Pettitte (5-5, 4.11), Joba Chamberlain, and Mariano Rivera (13/13 saves).

Jason Giambi is now one of the hottest hitters in baseball after being one of the worst. Johnny Damon has also been scorching the plate and basepaths.

The game was very entertaining, as opposed to the slugfests and poor middle relief in previous games.

Anyway, let’s take a look at how the Yanks have fared in series this year. It’s pretty depressing.

Beat Toronto Blue Jays (home) W
Lost to Tampa Bay Rays (home) L
Lost to Kansas City Royals (road) L
Lost to Boston Red Sox (road) L
Swept Tampa Bay Rays (road) T
Split Boston Red Sox (home) T
Lost to Baltimore Orioles (road) L
Beat Chicago White Sox (road) W
Split Cleveland Indians (road) T
Got swept by the Detroit Tigers (home) L
Swept Seattle Mariners (home) W
Lost to Cleveland Indians (home) L
Split Detroit Tigers (road- 3rd game PPD) T
Lost to Tampa Bay (road) L
Split NY Mets (home- 3rd game PPD) T
Beat Baltimore Orioles (home) W
Swept Seattle Mariners (home) W
Lost to Baltimore Orioles (road) L

Series Record: 5- 8- 5
That comes out to 26-27, 6 games out, last place. Current Wild Card Standings: 6 teams ahead of them, 4.5 games out.

Anyway, they needed to get hot. Losing 2/3 in Baltimore showed me that they don’t have what it takes right now.

Transactions:
Chris Britton was recalled from AAA Scranton since Ian Kennedy was placed on the DL. Chris is great.

When will the Yanks release Troy Hawkins?

When will Ramirez become the 8th inning guy?

Why is Farnsworth expected to be a setup man? He’s an unhealthy schlub disguised as an athlete.

A tale of two organizations, and two pitchers: The Mets keep Heilmann in the bullpen, the Yanks move Joba to the rotation.

Heilmann was unhappy about his role. Joba is willing to do whatever is asked of him.

    Dan, Girardi loved Kyle’s potential.

God, I agree with your assessment. As much as people hated the Yankees for so many years, it was the Mets all along. It was the Mets.
