Game 32: Vintage Mussina beat Mariners

Mike Mussina looked like a Future Hall of Famer yesterday, as the Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1. Moose hurled 6 innings, allowing no walks, six strikeouts, and 1 run. The Mariners got 7 hits off him, but Moose never wavered, as he won #254 in his career, all while pitching in the Modern Era American League East.

LaTroy Hawkins (1 hit no runs), Edwar Ramirez (2 walks, no runs), and Jose Veras (perfect) each hurled a scoreless inning a piece.

The Yanks shelled King Felix Hernandez. Johnny Damon was the hero of the day, with 2 doubles and a homerun. Derek Jeter’s 3 hits upped his average to .290. Hideki Matsui has a 13-game hitting streak.

Giambi and Cano went a combined 0-6, with 6 men left on base.

I want to share a little story a friend at work shared with me about Mike Mussina. This guy I work with named Bob has a friend that is a major league umpire. This umpire was calling a game at Yankee Stadium and Bob was waiting in the tunnel near the umpire changing room so him and his wife could go to dinner with the umpire. The players changing area at Yankee Stadium is near the umpires one and out comes Mike Mussina. Bob told me that a woman was there with her 10 year old son. The little kid was calling for him to sign a baseball for him and he just kept walking, right past the kid and didn't even acknowledge he was there. Now if that isn't the definition of a "bad apple" then what is.
