Game 8: KC Royals beat Hughes and Yankees

Well, the Yankees didn’t start their first road trip the way they wanted to, as the Kansas City Royals made the Yanks look like a minor league team today.

Royals pitching combined for double-digit strike-outs. The Yanks offense was once again dead, as they only squeezed 2 runs against the Royals’ 5 runs.

Phil Hughes had no control, and Ross Ohlendorf got roughed up a little coming in early (2 runs in 3 innings). Billy Traber continued to be effective, and LaTroy Hawkins once again put runners on in the 9th but escaped with surrendering no runs.

Quite frankly, the Royals looked invincible a la the 2002 Anaheim Angels, with bullpen guys with crazy names and fastball/changeups, and a bunch of young hitters who had the Yankees’ number. The fans of Missouri were very loud and it seemed like the Yanks didn’t have a chance to do anything today.

The mainstream news story is that Derek Jeter may be out for a week (big deal) and that A-Rod should be playing shortstop (he should).

Speaking of Alex Rodriguez, he had a golden sombrero (4 Ks) today. Darn.

Eight games into the season, and Joe Girardi’s 2008 Yanks are looking a lot like Joe Torre’s 2007 Yanks: the offense is inconsistent for unknown reasons. I’m not worried yet, but it has been frustrating having poor teams dominate us.
