A grass-roots effort is underway to save the 25-year-old Home Run Apple, which pops up from an upside-down top hat behind the centerfield wall every time a Met hits a long ball.
"The new stadium is being built to be reminiscent of the past, so to not take the apple with them would be like stealing history from the Mets," said Andrew Perlgut, co-founder of Savetheapple.com
"Hopefully we'll get tens of thousands of signatures on the petition and find some way to bring this to Fred Wilpon's attention and say, 'We want our apple.'"
Perlgut, 24, and childhood pal Lonnie Klein, 25, have collected more than 400 online signatures and are calling on fans far and wide to join their campaign.
"It would almost be a betrayal of the everyday Mets fan not to take the apple," Klein said. "The team owes it to the fans to bring the apple over."
Team officials said the old apple is too run down to survive a transfer to Citi Field in 2009.
They promise the relic will be put on display somewhere on the grounds of the new ballpark - but a brand new apple will take its place on the field.
"I appreciate the passion, but fans don't understand the reality that this particular apple is barely holding on and it wouldn't make any sense to use it in that manner," said Dave Howard, executive vice president of business operations for the Mets. "We will save it in an appropriate way."

Oh man, did I love that apple as a kid. They put it up in '82 (originally it said "Mets Magic"). They never fixed the plaster or plywood. I loved how the WOR Channel 9 cameras would always get the shot after a Met homerun. It was such a great sight to behold, especially when it was 1:30AM after a rain delay. It truly is a relic.
THAT BEING SAID, do I think it should be at the NEW stadium? No.
Should there be a modern replica or replacement, even if it's a computer graphic? Yes.
I'm surprised no one ever got their arm caught in that old contraption; it was a law-suit waiting to happen.
Who ever heard of an apple coming out of a hat, anyway? Is it magic? Oh, "Mets magic", I finally got it.
Please...someone burn the thing or throw it in the World's Fair with the other junk in Queens.
Gotta love Mets fans...the world is dying, Glavine's stuck on 299, Pedro's not back yet, the Braves are hot, and they're worried about that goddamn apple.
That apple is still at SHEA? Dude, I thought they would have trashed that YEARS ago. Holy cow! hahahahahaha!! Man oh man...you've got to be KIDDING me! How OLD is that thing? HAHAHAHAHA! Does it still work? Is that thing made of cardboard? I used to HATE that apple when the Cardinals used to play at Shea in the 80's. I'm surprised it hadn't burned down already. I can't BELIEVE that old apple is still at Shea, man. Are you kidding me?
I'm glad the Mets Hierarchy has decided to have the old apple on the grounds of the new stadium ... and to create a new apple for Citi Field.
I remember when I first saw the Mets apple appear in a video game ... I thought that was great. It made the game so much more realistic.
Call me crazy, but that apple seems to have a personality of its own. That 2nd photo, in particular, really shows it.
I'm surprised they never added a top hat and magic tricks to Mr. Mets' repertoire.
Yes, you are crazy. You think the apple is ALIVE? I bet you thought sock puppets were real when you were a kid, too. You've been Deep Six'ed.
Uh, yeah. Apples are alive, last I checked, dumbass. What you gonna do, sue a tree to prove me wrong?
