Snapshot Joe Says: “Igawa has command!”
Igawa takes command of situation in rotation
TAMPA – With Jeff Karstens perhaps gaining momentum to take the final rotation spot from Kei Igawa, the expensive Japanese import had his best outing of the spring last night against the Phillies.
Igawa, whose lack of control has irked Yankee brass, was brilliant, allowing no runs and two hits in five strong innings and prompting praise from Joe Torre.
In typical sports MEDIA coverage, after ripping him for his previous two Spring Training starts, the MEDIA praised K-Igawa for yesterday’s start.
That’s what five shutout innings will do for a New York player.
He is now 1-0, with an ERA of 3.00 in 3 starts. His strikeout and walk totals are extreme. This is what should have been expected at this point in spring.
As Tony and I joked about last month, this is going to be a loooooong 2007 baseball season.
By the way, I am a Jeff Karstens fan as well. He’s a career minor leaguer who did great as a late-season call-up last year. There’s a place for both of them on the roster.
